The Sounkyo Onsen Hyobaku Festival is a celebrated winter event held on the banks of the Ishikari River in Sounkyo, Kamikawa, Hokkaido. Since its inception in 1976, this historic festival has grown into a major attraction. The expansive 10,000 square meter venue utilizes the region's freezing temperatures to construct massive, breathtaking ice structures and sculptures. As night falls, these ice creations are bathed in multi-colored lights, transforming the entire area into a dazzling, seven-colored wonderland.
The festival began in 1976, originally conceived under the guidance of sculptor Toshihiro Takenaka. Having celebrated its 30th anniversary in 2005, the festival reaches a significant milestone in 2025 with its 50th anniversary. It has become a unique cultural staple of the region, artfully turning the harsh winter climate of the Ishikari River area into a beautiful, shared experience.
The venue is filled with diverse architectural ice structures. A standout feature is the 13-meter-tall ice observation tower, which offers a breathtaking 360-degree view of the entire illuminated festival grounds. Visitors can also visit the 'Hyobaku Shrine,' a unique ice structure where coins can be attached to the ice as offerings. Other highlights include ice tunnels, snow huts (kamakura), and various ice sculptures inspired by nature that decorate the venue.
The festival typically runs from late January through March. Because the primary attraction is the illumination, the best time to visit is during the evening and night. Depending on the year, special events such as opening ceremonies, traditional Hyobaku Taiko drum performances, lucky draws, and even rice cake-throwing (mochi-maki) may take place. Occasionally, fireworks displays are also held through corporate sponsorships.
Visitors can enjoy walking through intricate ice tunnels, taking in the views from the high observation tower, or participating in a unique way of worship at the ice shrine. There are also souvenir stalls available within the venue. The variety of activities and the specific events held can change depending on the season and the specific year of the festival.
The festival is located right next to the Sounkyo Onsen hot spring district. This makes it easy to relax in a hot spring facility after enjoying the freezing outdoor festivities. Many travel agencies also offer package tours specifically designed to include this ice festival.
The venue is located on the Ishikari River bank and is subject to extreme cold. Proper winter gear is essential: please wear a heavy coat, gloves, and a hat. Since you will be walking on snow and ice, wear shoes with excellent grip to prevent slipping. Cash is generally required for purchases at the souvenir stalls. Please check local availability for English-language support. As the venue is on a riverbank, be mindful of uneven surfaces caused by snow and ice.
