Soun-ji is a venerable temple of the Daijaku-ji school of the Rinzai sect, located in the scenic area of Hakone Yumoto, Kanagawa Prefecture. It served as the family temple for the Hojo clan, the famous lords of Odawara Castle, and the development of the surrounding Hakone Yumoto town was deeply connected to this temple. The grounds offer a tranquil atmosphere, featuring exquisite dry landscape (Karesansui) gardens and precious cultural assets that preserve the spirit of the Sengoku (Warring States) period.
The history of Soun-ji dates back to 1521 (the first year of the Daiei era). It was established by Hojo Tsuna, the son of the first Hojo Soun, following his father's wishes. The temple faced significant hardships, including near-destruction during Toyotomi Hideyoshi's siege of Odawara in 1590, but was later restored in 1627 by the monk Kikkei. More than just a religious site, Soun-ji has stood as a symbol of the Hojo clan's legacy and has grown alongside the local community for centuries.
The temple grounds house numerous precious cultural assets. A standout feature is the beautiful Karesansui (dry landscape) garden, said to be associated with the prominent Sengoku-era figure Hojo Nagatsuna (Gen'an). Visitors can also admire National Important Cultural Properties, such as the portrait of Hojo Soun, and other historical artifacts that evoke the weight of history. To the left of the main gate stands a bell tower housing a large, ancient bronze bell, which is said to have been used during the time of Toyotomi Hideyoshi's rapid-fire castle construction in the Odawara region.
Soun-ji reveals different charms throughout the seasons. In early summer, the lush greenery of the evergreen broad-leaved forest (a Kanagawa Natural Monument) is particularly striking, and you may hear the distinctive sounds of the Hime-haruzemi cicadas. For those seeking a moment of quiet prayer, visiting in the clear, crisp air of the morning is highly recommended to experience the serene atmosphere around the graves of the five generations of the Hojo clan.
Visitors can enjoy a leisurely stroll while contemplating the historic architecture and gardens. Whether you are finding peace in the Zen garden or studying historical artifacts, the temple offers a deep connection to traditional Japanese aesthetics. Please note that the main hall (Hondo) is only open for special viewing on limited days in November, making it a special opportunity for a deeper historical experience.
Located in the heart of Hakone Yumoto, Soun-ji is surrounded by many attractions. After exploring the temple, you can wander through the nearby hot spring town, visit Hakusan Shrine, or enjoy the charming traditional streetscapes. The area is also well-equipped with various accommodations and cafes, making it a convenient base for your Hakone sightseeing.
As the grounds feature gravel paths and some steps, comfortable walking shoes are highly recommended. Please maintain a respectful and quiet demeanor while visiting. Note that as of November 2021, Goshuin (temple stamps) may not be available, so please check-in with the staff if interested. Since access to the main hall is seasonal, please plan your visit accordingly.
