Sotobori Park is a unique green space located in Chiyoda and Shinjuku, Tokyo, developed along the remains of the Edo Castle outer moats (specifically the Ushigome, Niimifude, and Ichigaya moats). The park features a long, narrow layout stretching approximately 2km from the vicinity of JR Iidabashi Station to the south of Yotsuya Station. The presence of these ancient moats, which once served as defensive barriers for Edo Castle, provides a rare glimpse into historical Tokyo. The foundation of this park lies in the "Sotobori" (Outer Moat) of Edo Castle. Additionally, near the west side of Yotsuya Station, you will find the "Sotobori Park General Ground," which features sports facilities such as a baseball field with night lighting and tennis courts. Although the park is divided into several sections by the JR Chuo Line tracks, each area offers its own unique view and atmosphere.
The most significant seasonal event is the cherry blossom season from March to April. During this time, the park becomes a major destination, with the Chiyoda City even setting up temporary waste disposal stations to accommodate the large crowds of hanami (flower viewing) enthusiasts. Daytime visits in spring are perfect for enjoying the blossoms under the sunlight. Near the sports grounds, the presence of night lighting also allows for evening activities. Regardless of the season, the park is a popular spot for daytime strolls and a refreshing break for local professionals and students.
The park is primarily designed for walking and relaxation. Walking along the riverside promenade allows you to enjoy a tranquil waterfront view right in the heart of the city. The park is conveniently located near major transit hubs, including Iidabashi, Ichigaya, and Yotsuya Stations. From the Iidabashi area, the promenade continues along the embankment, separated from the JR Chuo Line tracks.
