SORA terrace is a premier observation cafe located within the Ryuoo Mountain Resort in Nagano Prefecture, situated at a breathtaking altitude of 1,770m. The journey to the cafe is part of the experience itself, as you ascend via one of the world's largest ropeways, capable of carrying 166 passengers at once. The cafe features a spacious, open design that allows visitors to feel immersed in nature. When weather conditions are right, you can witness the awe-inspiring phenomenon of a 'sea of clouds' (unkai) stretching beneath you, or watch the sky transform into a dramatic palette of colors during a stunning sunset.
The area is part of the Ryuoo Mountain Resort, a destination that showcases the changing beauty of Japan's seasons. Because of its high altitude, the facility is designed to let visitors experience the raw, majestic beauty of the mountains while enjoying modern comfort. The architecture itself is a point of interest, with its striking design and spiral staircases that have become a popular subject for photography and social media.
The greatest draw is the panoramic view from 1,770m above sea level. The shifting colors of the sky during sunset and the rare sight of the sea of clouds are unique experiences found only here. The journey via the large-capacity ropeway is also a highlight, serving as an exciting part of the ascent. SORA terrace is most popular during the 'Green Season' (from spring through autumn). For the most dramatic experience, we recommend visiting during the late afternoon to witness the sunset, when the sky undergoes a breathtaking transformation. If atmospheric conditions allow, you may also witness the magical 'sea of clouds,' making you feel as though you are floating above the world. Because the landscape and sky change with the seasons, every visit offers a different perspective of nature.
The primary activity here is enjoying a relaxing cafe experience with a view. You can indulge in seasonal refreshments, such as fruit sodas and other specialty drinks, while taking in the scenery. The architectural elements, such as the unique spiral staircase, also provide a wonderful backdrop for a relaxing break in nature.
SORA terrace is located in the Hokushin region of Nagano, an area famous for its stunning natural landscapes and high-quality tourism. You can reach the area via the Shinkansen (bullet train) from Nagano Station in approximately 1.5 hours, or by car via the Kan-etsu Expressway. The surrounding area is dotted with various attractions, including hot spring resorts (onsen) and world-class ski resorts, making it an ideal base for exploring Nagano.
Since the cafe is located at a high altitude of 1,770m, the temperature is significantly lower than in the lowlands. Regardless of the season, please bring a jacket or extra layers to stay comfortable.
