Sokushuin is a sub-temple of the Daihonzan Tofuku-ji, belonging to the Rinzai Zen school. It possesses a profound history established by the Shimazu clan of the Satsuma Domain, marking a turbulent era of Japan's modernization. The temple features a beautiful garden designated as a scenic spot by Kyoto City, offering a serene atmosphere where nature and history are seamlessly integrated.
The history of this temple dates back to 1387. It was founded by Shimazu Hisahisa of the Kyushu Satsuma Domain, with the monk Gochu Genju serving as the first abbot. The name 'Sokushuin' is derived from the posthumous name of Shimazu Hisahisa, 'Reigaku Genkyu Sokushuin.' Originally located further south, the temple was destroyed by fire in 1569 and was later rebuilt at its current location around 1613 by Shimazu Yoshihisa.
This site is also the former location of 'Rinrin-den,' a mountain villa where the Kanpaku Fujiwara no Kanemitsu spent his later years. It is a historically significant location also depicted in the National Treasure 'Portrait of Honen.' Furthermore, a famous historical episode tells of Saigo Takamori and the monk Gessho, who used the 'Saishintei' pavilion within Sokushuin to devise political strategies while evading Shogunate and Shinsengumi pursuers during the turbulent Bakumatsu period. In 1879, the 'Monument to the Fallen in the Eastern Expedition' was erected to mourn those lost in the Battle of Toba-Fushimi, highlighting the temple's role in Japan's modern history.
The greatest feature of Sokushuin is its beautiful garden, a designated scenic spot of Kyoto City. Visitors can enjoy a landscape that changes with the seasons. The autumn foliage season is particularly breathtaking, as vibrant colors illuminate the garden. The sight of blooming Senryo flowers alongside the historic architecture also creates a stunning scenery. While Sokushuin offers different charms throughout the year, the autumn foliage season is the most spectacular time to visit, as the garden is bathed in brilliant colors.
