Suryomon Observatory is a scenic viewpoint located at an altitude of approximately 200 meters in Muroran, Hokkaido. The defining feature of this location is its unobstructed 360-degree panoramic view. On days with excellent weather, the sense of openness is immense, allowing visitors to see far-reaching mountains and the ocean. It offers a perfect blend of urban views of Muroran and the surrounding natural beauty.
The name of the mountain carries a unique historical significance. In 1872, an American named Warfield, who served as a land surveyor and road builder, climbed this mountain to survey the area for the construction of the Sapporo main road. Because of his work, the mountain was once known as 'Kento-yama' (Observation Mountain) before being renamed 'Suryomon' (Survey Mountain). Additionally, the famous poets Tekkan and Akiko Yosano visited this area in 1931, leaving behind poems that capture the scenery of the time. This makes the site a place where nature and history intersect.
The summit features a TV tower, which serves as the iconic symbol of the area. Since 1988, a lighting system has been in place where the tower is illuminated from sunset until late at night (until 23:00 from October to March) upon request with a specific message. This light serves as a constant beacon for the city of Muroran. On clear days, the visibility is exceptional, offering a dynamic view of the distant topography.
Suryomon Observatory is accessible 24 hours a day. The most popular time to visit is after sunset, when the city lights and the illuminated TV tower create a mesmerizing nightscape. While beautiful in all seasons, a clear, sunny day will provide the most expansive panoramic views. Please note that the lighting schedule for the tower changes seasonally, ending at 23:00 during the winter months (October to March).
Visitors can enjoy a peaceful moment observing nature. From the summit, you can observe the layout of Muroran and the surrounding geography from a 360-degree perspective. The area is also known as a habitat for various birds, allowing you to enjoy the sounds of nature. Because the terrain is not overly steep, it is a relaxing spot to enjoy the scenery at a comfortable pace.
The area surrounding the observatory is rich in the natural landscapes of Muroran. The view from the top provides a bird's-eye view of the entire city. Routes for enjoying the local nature are well-maintained. Access is available via a walk from JR Muroran Station or by car. If driving, the route via the Muroran IC is the most convenient.
While you can access the summit by foot or car, please dress appropriately for the weather as this is an outdoor location. If visiting at night, it is highly recommended to bring warm clothing to prepare for temperature drops. There are no admission fees or reservation requirements as the observatory is an open public space. Please respect the environment by taking all your trash home with you.
