The area is characterized by a stunning 1.5km-long avenue of black pine trees, reflecting the history of Soka-juku, a prosperous post town along the Nikko Kaido road. The area is deeply connected to the history of Soka-juku, an important post town on the Nikko Kaido road during the Edo period. It holds significant literary importance as the place where the famous poet Matsuo Basho stopped during the beginning of his journey described in 'Oku no Hosomichi.' The history of these pine trees is ancient; some accounts suggest they were planted during the river improvements of 1630 or 1683. Despite past threats from environmental factors, the landscape has been preserved through the dedicated efforts of the local 'Pine Tree Preservation Society.' In 2014, its cultural value was officially recognized by the Agency for Cultural Affairs when it was designated as a National Scenic Beauty.
