Sokei-ji (Takuan-ji) is a temple of the Daijoji school of the Rinzai sect, located in Izushi, Toyooka City, Hyogo Prefecture. It is widely known for its connection to the legendary Zen master Takuan Soho and has long served as the family temple for the lords of Izushi Castle. The temple grounds feature a harmonious blend of architecture and nature, including the Main Hall (Hondo), the Kaizan-do hall, the Bell Tower Gate (Shoro-mon), and a Zazen meditation hall, all set within a beautifully landscaped Japanese garden.
Sokei-ji was founded in 1392 by Yamana Ujikiyo, the lord of Izushi at the time. The name of the temple is derived from his posthumous name, 'Sokei-ji-dono.' The temple was later revitalized in 1616 by the monk Takuan Soho. Takuan Soho is a legendary figure who even served the Shogun Tokugawa Iemitsu, and it is said he spent a significant amount of time in Izushi. His grave remains on the temple grounds. Additionally, the Main Hall garden is a classic 'Chisen Kansho-shiki' (pond-strolling) garden created in the early Edo period and is designated as a cultural property of Hyogo Prefecture.
The temple grounds are dotted with significant historical structures and cultural assets. Notable sites include the Main Hall, the Kaizan-do (a designated cultural property of Toyooka City), and the Bell Tower Gate (Yume-no-Kane), which is related to the teachings of Takuan Soho. The garden of the Main Hall, also known as 'Fushikien' or the 'Crane and Turtle Garden,' is designed to reflect the profound spirit of Zen. Visitors can also observe various cultural assets, including portraits of Takuan Soho.
You can enjoy a different landscape depending on the season. In spring, look for the beauty of the 'Wasuke' plants, and in autumn, the temple is highly recommended for its stunning fall foliage. During winter, you may even experience a serene, snow-covered landscape. The temple is open for visitors from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM.
The temple features a Zazen (seated meditation) hall, which was donated by the founder of Panasonic, Konosuke Matsushita. The temple also serves as a center for local cultural preservation through activities such as the 'Takuan Soho Yumemi-no-kai.' A visit to Sokei-ji can be easily combined with a stroll around Izushi Castle or a trip to the nearby Kinosaki Onsen area.
Sokei-ji is located just a 10-minute walk from Izushi Castle. The surrounding area is rich with tourism, including Kinosaki Onsen, Kinosaki Marine World, and areas where seasonal festivals like the 'Sunflower Festival' are held. Nearby temples such as Kongo-ji and Entsu-ji also offer a deep sense of local history.
When visiting, it is recommended to wear modest, respectful clothing. As the temple grounds contain stairs and slopes, comfortable walking shoes are highly recommended.
