Guide
Sogen-ji is a Zen temple of the Soto school located in Ota City, Gunma Prefecture. Its most striking feature is the "Sazae-do" (Conch Shell Hall), a Kannon worship hall. This building features a unique spiral interior structure, requiring visitors to walk in a clockwise direction to complete their pilgrimage. This architectural style, known as a Sansodo, was part of the Kannon worship culture that flourished during the Edo period in the Kanto and Tohoku regions. Due to its profound architectural value, the structure is designated as an Important Cultural Property of Japan.
The origins of the temple are said to date back to the founding by a devotee who sought to honor the spirit of Shoju-hime, brought from Kyoto by the Nitta clan. After the main hall was destroyed by fire during the Edo period, the current Kannon Hall was constructed. This hall reflects the spiritual traditions of the 33-Kannon and 100-Kноnnon worship that developed during the mid-Edo period. The temple grounds also contain various stone-carved cultural assets, such as Myogo-kaku pagodas and Gorinto (five-ringed towers), which serve as historical witnesses to the region's past.

The primary attraction is undoubtedly the Sazae-do with its spiral corridor. The one-way, clockwise movement allows for a unique meditative experience as you approach the Kannon statue. As you walk the winding path, your perspective naturally shifts, offering a sense of discovery. Additionally, the presence of historical stone monuments throughout the grounds allows visitors to observe traditional Japanese architectural styles and the serene atmosphere of a classic Buddhist temple.
The most recommended time to visit is during the hydrangea season. The temple grounds are adorned with beautiful hydrangeas, providing a stunning colorful backdrop to your visit. For the best experience, we recommend visiting during daylight hours to clearly observe the intricate details of the spiral structure and the craftsmanship of the building. If you wish to experience the profound silence and spiritual stillness of the temple, an early morning visit is ideal.
At Sogen-ji, you can experience the physical sensation of the traditional "Sazae-do" structure. Walking through the spiral-shaped passage in a clockwise direction is a rare opportunity to participate in a traditional Japanese ritual of circumambulation. This is more than just a sightseeing tour; it is a chance to touch the deep-rooted religious culture and sophisticated architectural techniques of Japan.
The area around Ota City is dotted with various temples and spots where you can enjoy seasonal flowers. After visiting Sogen-ji, we recommend exploring the nearby historical streets and natural landscapes to make your trip to Gunma even more memorable.
Please observe standard temple etiquette during your visit. When walking through the interior of the architectural structures, please be mindful of your footing and maintain a quiet, respectful demeanor. We recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes and bringing a camera to capture the beautiful hydrangeas depending on the season.
