Sobetsu Park is a scenic park located in Sobetsu Town, Uryu District, Hokkaido, situated on an elevated plateau overlooking the beautiful Lake Toya. The park covers a vast area of approximately 86,000 square meters, with about 20,000 square meters of its sloping terrain dedicated to a magnificent grove of roughly 300 Bungo plum trees. In the spring, the sight of pale pink plum blossoms and cherry blossoms blooming together creates a mesmerizing tapestry of color against the deep blue waters of Lake Toya and the surrounding mountain ranges.
The surrounding area is characterized by a dynamic landscape shaped by intense volcanic activity. The Sobetsu area is home to many geologically significant sites where visitors can feel the raw energy of nature. Sobetsu Park has been developed as a place to appreciate seasonal flora within this unique natural environment. The blooming season of the Bungo plum, in particular, serves as a symbolic herald of spring for the local community.
The primary attraction is the plum grove sprawling across the hillside. During spring, the approximately 300 Bungo plum trees produce delicate blossoms that, alongside the cherry blossoms, create a stunning pink gradient across the landscape. From the elevated viewpoints, visitors can enjoy a wide-angle view of the entire Lake Toya caldera and the surrounding mountains. The vastness of the park allows for multi-angled observations of how the natural scenery shifts with the seasons.
The most highly recommended time to visit is spring, when the plum and cherry blossoms bloom simultaneously. The sight of the slopes covered in soft pink blossoms is a unique seasonal spectacle. While daytime offers bright, vibrant colors, visiting during the late afternoon allows you to witness the beautiful color gradients of the sunset over Lake Toya. Please note that the park is closed for a maintenance period from November through mid-April.

You can walk through the paths nestled between the plum trees, immersing yourself in the sounds of nature and the scent of seasonal flowers. The park is surrounded by several natural landmarks near Lake Toya. It offers excellent access to sites related to volcanic activity and geothermal energy, such as the base of Mt. Showa Shinzan, the Usuzan Ropeway, and the various Lake Toya Onsen (hot spring) resorts. You can easily incorporate a visit to Sobetsu Park into a broader itinerary exploring the dynamic natural beauty of the Lake Toya region.
We highly recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes, as the park features sloping terrain. While the park itself is free to enter, please carry some cash if you plan to use nearby facilities or services. English-language signage and staff support may be limited, so it is helpful to check maps or information in advance. Photography of the landscape is highly encouraged, but please respect the natural environment and follow local etiquette.
