Shukugawa Park (officially known as Shukugawa Riverbed Green Space) is a vast park spanning approximately 3.2 km along the Shukugawa River in Nishinomiya, Hyogo Prefecture. The area covers about 20.8 hectares, stretching from Kōshiendone-hama in the south to Ginsuibashi Bridge in the north, offering a rich and natural landscape. The park is most famous during the spring season when approximately 1,160 Yoshino cherry trees reach full bloom, painting both sides of the river in vibrant shades of pink. This breathtaking view has earned the park recognition as one of the "Top 100 Cherry Blossom Spots" and one of the "100 Historic Parks of Japan," making it a beloved destination for experiencing the changing seasons.
The park is a green space developed along the banks of the Shukugawa River. This area has long been preserved as a natural environment, maintaining a harmonious coexistence of clear running water and lush greenery even within an urban setting. Having established its reputation as a premier cherry blossom destination, the park is maintained as a place for both local citizens and tourists to relax while preserving the local natural ecosystem. Today, it serves as a vital "urban oasis" where visitors can escape the hustle and bustle of the city.
The greatest draw is the cherry blossom path that lines both sides of the waterway during spring. The sight of the stone embankments, the clear water, and the falling petals creates a deeply poetic and emotional atmosphere. Additionally, the park features about 1,520 pine trees, ensuring lush greenery even outside the cherry blossom season. There are stairs leading down to the river in several locations, allowing visitors to experience the water's edge closely. The park also features beautifully maintained flower beds tended by local citizens, offering a variety of seasonal blooms.
The most iconic time to visit is from March to April during the cherry blossom season. During full bloom, you can witness the stunning sight of petals floating on the water's surface. In summer, the greenery along the river deepens, providing a refreshing and cool atmosphere. For the best experience, visit during the bright daylight hours to see the colors of the flowers and greenery vividly, or in the late afternoon for a peaceful, relaxing stroll alongside the river. The park is also a popular spot for morning and evening exercise, such as walking and jogging.
The park offers an ideal course for walking and jogging. The 3.2km path is relatively flat in many sections, making it perfect for a leisurely stroll while enjoying the scenery. For families with young children, there are play areas equipped with slides, swings, and seesaws. There are even spots where children can enjoy interacting with nature near the water. Please note that using open flames, barbecuing, selling goods, or setting up commercial stalls is strictly prohibited within the park.
The park is highly accessible via the Hankyu and Hanshin railway lines. It is located just a short walk from Kōshien Station on the Hanshin Line and is also within walking distance of Sakura-Shukugawa Station on the JR line. The surrounding area features residential neighborhoods and commercial facilities, making it easy to visit a nearby cafe or restaurant after your walk. It is conveniently located near the heart of Nishinomiya City.
We recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes and clothing suitable for the season. While there are benches available for resting, please remember that barbecuing and the use of open flames are strictly prohibited. Additionally, please be aware that the river level can rise rapidly during heavy rain; avoid entering the river area during or immediately after rainfall. As this is a public space, please follow local etiquette, such as taking your trash home with you.
