Seiten-kyu is a profound Taoist sanctuary located in Sakado City, Saitama Prefecture. It is a rare and authentic example of a traditional Taoist palace within Japan, meticulously recreating the architectural styles of Taiwan. The sprawling complex covers approximately 7,000 tsubo (approx. 23,000 square meters), standing out for its immense scale and opulence compared to other Taoist sites in the country. To ensure absolute authenticity, many building materials were shipped from Taiwan, and the design was overseen by specialists in Taiwan, ensuring every detail reflects genuine Taiwanese culture.
History & Cultural Background
The temple was founded by Mr. Kokuteten. After surviving a life-threatening illness through a spiritual connection with the deity Sanqing Daozu, Mr. Kokuteten felt a profound calling to build a sanctuary where others could also receive divine blessings. The construction was a massive undertaking that took 15 years to complete, involving master craftsmen brought in from Taiwan. Construction began in 1981 and the temple was officially opened in 1995. Beyond being a place of worship, it serves as a vital cultural bridge, preserving and transmitting traditional Taiwanese culture to Japan.

The architecture features unique styles rarely seen in standard Japanese shrines or temples:
*Yanbi-seki (Swallowtail Ridges)**: The roof edges curve upward gracefully like the tails of swallows. This striking feature is visible on the gates, the front hall, and the main hall.
*Jiannian (Cut-and-Paste Porcelain Art)**: A traditional technique where colorful ceramic or glass pieces are adhered to a core to create vibrant decorations. The roofs are adorned with magnificent dragons, phoenixes, and Qilin.
*Dragon Pillars**: Eight magnificent pillars, each carved from a single piece of stone, stand nearly 5 meters tall. They feature incredibly intricate openwork carvings of dragons.
*Caisson (Sou-sei) Ceilings**: These are highly decorative, dome-like ceiling structures.
