Shoseien is a beautiful garden designated as a National Scenic Spot of Japan. It serves as an integral part of the Higashi Hongan-ji temple complex (Shinshu Otani sect). Known for its sophisticated design that reflects the tastes of classical literati, the garden was officially designated as a National Scenic Spot in 1936. The landscape is characterized by the 'Thirteen Views,' a series of diverse and breathtaking vistas. Depending on when you visit, the garden reveals a different face, from vibrant seasonal flowers to serene greenery, captivating all who walk its paths.

From March to October, the garden is open from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM (last entry at 4:30 PM). From November to February, the hours are 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM (last entry at 3:30 PM). Please check the season before your visit.
While most visitors enjoy a quiet stroll through the gardens, special events such as guided tours led by monks are occasionally held. Additionally, certain buildings that are usually closed to the public may be used for special events like tea ceremonies, exhibitions, or wedding photography. Please inquire in advance for facility usage.
Located near the historic heart of Kyoto near Higashi Hongan-ji, Shoseien is easily accessible from Kyoto Station. The surrounding area is rich with other temples and cultural sites, making it easy to combine a visit to Shoseien with a broader Kyoto sightseeing itinerary.
As the garden contains unpaved paths and some uneven terrain, we recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes. Please dress appropriately for the weather.
