Shomyoji Temple is a Shingon-Ritsu sect temple located in Kanazawa Ward, Yokohama, Kanagawa Prefecture. Its origins trace back to a private chapel built by Hojo Sanetoki, a key figure in the Kamakura Shogunate, within his residence in Rokura-sho Kanazawa. As the family temple of the Kanazawa Hojo clan, it holds significant historical importance and is designated as a national historic site. The temple grounds feature a breathtaking "Pure Land Garden" centered around Ajiike Pond, offering a landscape that preserves the profound atmosphere of the medieval era.
The origins of this temple date back to the mid-13th century. Established by Hojo Sanetoki, the temple reached its peak during the era of his grandson, Sadayoshi, when it became a grand temple complex complete with a seven-hall structure, including a three-story pagoda. The central deity, the Standing Maitreya Bodhisattva, is a National Important Cultural Property believed to have been commissioned by Sanetoki. Additionally, the bell tower, known for the "Evening Bell of Shomyo"—one of the Kanazawa Hakkei (Eight Views of Kanazawa) depicted by Utagawa Hiroshige—serves as a testament to the location's rich history.
Passing through the vermilion-painted Akamon (Red Gate), you will find a path lined with cherry trees leading to the Nio-mon Gate, where massive 4-meter-tall Nio statues stand guard. Beyond this, the Pure Land Garden unfolds, featuring Ajiike Pond, Nakano Island, and the Hanashi and Hirabashi bridges. This garden was reconstructed in 1987 based on the Pure Land garden styles of the late Heian period. Other notable features include an ancient ginkgo tree over 800 years old, weathered stone Buddhas, and various important cultural assets.
The temple offers stunning scenery throughout the seasons. In spring, cherry blossom trees line the approach, while early summer brings the beauty of yellow irises. Autumn transforms the grounds with vibrant fall foliage, creating a harmonious landscape of nature and historic architecture. In early May, the traditional Noh theater (Takigino) is sometimes held, and seasonal light-up events are also conducted. During these illuminations, the Hanashi Bridge, the main hall, and the Nio statues are beautifully lit, reflecting off the surface of Ajiike Pond to create a mystical medieval atmosphere.
Every Saturday and Sunday, between 10:00 AM and 12:30 PM, the Yokohama Kanazawa City Guide Association offers free garden tours (canceled in case of rain). Visitors can also experience the rare sight of traditional Noh performances in early May. A quiet stroll around the perimeter of Ajiike Pond allows for peaceful contemplation of the historical architecture and natural beauty.
The area surrounding Shomyoji is rich in historical heritage. The "Shomyoji Citizen's Forest" encompasses a vast area around Mt. Kanazawa, a part of the Kanazawa Sanzan. Nearby, the Kanagawa Prefectural Kanazawa Bunko serves as both a museum and a library, offering further opportunities to explore the region's medieval culture.
We recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes, as the temple grounds contain slopes and stairs. Please be mindful of your footing. As a religious site, cash is required for offerings or certain events. Regarding photography, please follow local instructions, as there may be restrictions to protect cultural properties. While English signage or staff support may be limited, please check on-site for availability.
