Shokoji Temple is a temple of the Jodo Shinshu Honganji school located in Fushikokofu, Takaoka City, Toyama Prefecture. The temple grounds are home to several Important Cultural Properties, most notably the Main Hall (Hondo) and the Grand Hall (Daihiro) with the Shikidai, both of which have been designated as National Treasures. The site is characterized by its expansive, grand-scale wooden architecture that preserves the architectural atmosphere of the Edo period. Following recent large-scale restoration projects, the historical integrity of these magnificent structures has been meticulously maintained.
The origins of Shokoji Temple date back to 1471, founded as Tsuchiyama Gobo by Rennyo. Throughout its history, the temple has endured fires and relocations before settling in its current location in Takaoka. During the Edo period, the temple grounds were developed under the patronage of the Maeda clan of the Kaga Domain. The site also holds deep local significance, as the 10th lord of the domain, Maeda Harunobu, is said to have entered the priesthood here. In 2022, the Main Hall and the Grand Hall/Shikidai were officially designated as National Treasures. Additionally, the temple was recognized as a component of the 'Japan Heritage' in 2015.
The primary highlight is the pair of National Treasure structures: the Main Hall and the Grand Hall. The Main Hall is a massive wooden structure reflecting the architectural style of the late Edo period; its immense scale and height create a sense of awe and profound presence. The Grand Hall offers a serene space with traditional tatami mats, allowing visitors to feel the texture of the wood and the quietude of historical Japanese life. Other notable features include the historic gates, such as the Karamon and Somon, which frame the beautiful temple landscape.
Shokoji Temple offers different atmospheres depending on the season. From March to November, the temple is open from 9:00 AM to 4:30 PM (last entry at 4:00 PM). From December to February, the hours are 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM (last entry at 3:30 PM). Please note that during the New Year period (December 29 to January 4), only the Main Hall and the outer grounds are accessible; the Grand Hall and other inner buildings are closed to the public. Visiting during the bright daylight hours is recommended to fully appreciate the intricate details of the wooden architecture.
Visitors can enjoy a contemplative walk through the historic grounds and architecture. To deepen your understanding, an audio guide is available for rent (500 JPY). Furthermore, the temple offers special programs such as Shakyo (sutra copying) experiences, allowing you to touch upon traditional Japanese spiritual culture in a peaceful, historic setting.
Shokoji Temple is part of the 'Fushiki/Toyama Bay Side Sightseeing' route. It is easily combined with visits to the Himi area, Amaharashi Coast, or the Michi-no-Eki Amaharashi. While it is a short distance from the main Takaoka sightseeing hubs, it is a perfect destination for a scenic drive.
When visiting, modest and respectful clothing is recommended. Please note that pets are not allowed on the premises. If you wish to use the audio guide, there is a fee of 500 JPY. For groups wishing to request a volunteer guide, please contact the temple at least 3 days in advance. As this is a sacred Buddhist site, please maintain a quiet and respectful demeanor at all times.
