Shishigahaba Shitsugen is a precious wetland located in Kaho City, Akita Prefecture, nurtured by the abundant waters of Mt. Chokai. At an elevation of approximately 550m, the area features a massive amount of spring water emerging from the terminal cliffs of lava flows, which has created this unique ecosystem. The scenic boardwalk-lined walking course spans about 5km, allowing visitors to feel the overwhelming vitality of nature while surrounded by massive groves of beech and oak trees.

History & Cultural Background

The landscape of this area is a beautiful blend of natural processes and human history. From the late Edo period through the Showa era, charcoal making was a common practice in this region. It is said that the historical harvesting of trees influenced the unique, twisted growth patterns of the current beech trees. Geologically, the environment was shaped when lava flows settled over the debris from a massive mountain collapse of Mt. Chokai, creating the perfect conditions for the current spring-fed wetland.

Shishigahaba Shitsugen offers rare natural phenomena and flora found nowhere else:

• *Agariko Daio**: A legendary giant beech tree over 300 years old with a trunk circumference of 7.62m. Its unique shape is a symbol of the forest's resilience.
• *Chokai Marimo**: These are mosses that grow in ball-like clusters, some exceeding 1m in diameter. While they may look like they are attached to rocks, they are actually free-growing spherical mosses.
• *Detsubo Pond**: The most abundant spring within the wetland. The water remains very cold (7.2–7.3°C) and acidic (pH 4.5–4.6), maintaining a highly specialized environment.

The wetland offers a different face depending on when you visit. From April to June, the season of fresh greenery, the air is exceptionally clear, making it an ideal time for a refreshing walk along the boardwalks.
