Shiroyazaki is a cape located in Higashidori Village, Shimokita District, Aomori Prefecture, marking the northeasternmost tip of Honshu island. Historically known as a dangerous area for maritime navigation, the landscape is now defined by its rugged coastline and the iconic Shiroyozaki Lighthouse. This destination offers a unique coexistence of human history and nature, where the white lighthouse stands prominently against a backdrop of grazing Kandachi-uma horses.
The area is home to a unique grazing culture known as "Shiki-otsuki." Based on traditional horse-rearing methods from the Nanbu clan era, the Kandachi-uma horses have been bred to withstand the harsh, cold environments of this region. Today, through conservation efforts, these hardy horses can be seen grazing in the pastures. The Shiroyozaki Lighthouse itself is a significant landmark, featuring a brick structure with over 120 years of history, serving as a testament to the region's maritime heritage.
The centerpiece of the cape is the Shiroyozaki Lighthouse. The structure features 128 steps leading to the top, where visitors can enjoy an expansive, breathtaking view of the Tsugaru Strait and the Pacific Ocean. Surrounding the lighthouse are vast pastures where the Kandachi-uma horses spend their days peacefully. Between April and June, visitors may even witness the birth of young foals. The scenery shifts beautifully depending on the time of day and season, offering different expressions of the sea and the movement of the horses.
While Shiroyazaki is beautiful year-round, the autumn months of October and November are particularly stunning due to the clear, crisp air and vivid seasonal changes. Spring (April to June) is an excellent time for animal lovers to see the birth of new foals. Please note that during the winter season (December to March), certain facilities, including the lighthouse interior, may be closed. For the best experience of the views and wildlife, we recommend visiting during daylight hours.
Visitors can enjoy the harmony between historical architecture and natural landscapes. A key experience is climbing the lighthouse stairs to witness the panoramic 360-degree view from the summit. The Kandachi-uma horses live in protected pastures, allowing you to observe their natural behavior from a respectful distance through the perimeter gates.
Nearby attractions include the Sarugamori Hibumotsurin (Sarugamori submerged forest), which is excellent for nature observation, and the Gyugawa Rest House, a convenient spot for taking a break. This area is also part of the Shimokita Geopark, making it a fascinating place for those interested in studying unique geological formations and natural environments.
Because the cape is highly exposed to the elements, it can be extremely windy and cold; please bring windproof clothing and wear comfortable walking shoes for the lighthouse stairs. If you wish to tour the lighthouse, please note that admission fees must be paid in cash. When observing the horses, please maintain a respectful distance and do not approach the gates. For photography, please respect the animals and the natural environment by following local rules.
