Shiroyone Senmaida is a breathtaking terraced rice field located in Shiroyone, Wajima City, Ishikawa Prefecture, facing the Sea of Japan. Approximately 1,004 small rice paddies are layered along the coastline, creating a stunning geometric pattern that seems to flow into the sea. This site is a vital cultural landscape of the Oku-Noto region, designated as a "Connecting Terraced Rice Field Heritage" by the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, and was officially recognized as a Globally Important Agricultural Heritage System in 2011. The scale of the paddies is remarkably small, with some being only about 50 centimeters square, showcasing a unique beauty that utilizes the natural topography.
The history of Shiroyone Senmaida dates back to the early Edo period of the Kaga Domain. Water systems like the Taniyama Irrigation Canal, established around 1632, have supported the agriculture of this land for centuries. The deep connection between the landscape and the local people is even reflected in traditional poetry. While salt production once took place along this coastline, current efforts focus on preserving the landscape. Organizations such as the local "Shiroyone Senmaida Aikokai" and various scenic preservation councils work tirelessly to maintain traditional farming methods and the cultural landscape.
The greatest appeal lies in the dramatic color changes throughout the seasons. In spring, the water-filled paddies act as mirrors, reflecting the sky with a brilliant shimmer. In summer, the vibrant green of the rice plants creates a striking contrast against the deep blue of the sea. In autumn, the landscape turns into a waving sea of golden rice stalks. During the winter, the area hosts the "Aze no Kirameki" event. During this time, approximately 25,000 solar-powered LED lights are placed along the ridges of the paddies, transforming the terraced fields into a mystical, glowing space after sunset.
While the scenery is beautiful year-round, the appearance of the rice paddies changes significantly by season. Spring (around May) features the shimmering water surfaces; Summer (June–August) showcases the most vibrant greenery; and Autumn (September–October) offers a golden landscape before harvest.
