Shirotaike Pasture Observatory is a scenic viewpoint located at an altitude of 550m in Shichikura-cho, Nanae Town, Hokkaido. It is part of the historic Shirotaike Pasture, which has a rich history dating back to 1920. Situated within a vast municipal pasture covering approximately 160 hectares, the observatory provides a spectacular vantage point. From here, you can witness the majestic silhouette of Mount Komagatake, the iconic shape of Hakodateyama, and the sprawling expanse of the Ono Plain. At night, the area offers an exceptional view of the city lights, often celebrated for its brilliant, star-like night scenery.
The Shirotaike Pasture is a community-rooted municipal pasture that has preserved its way of life since 1920. This vast greenery has long served as a cornerstone of Hokkaido's livestock culture. Even today, about 180 cattle graze peacefully across the pastures. Depending on the season, visitors can observe the cattle grazing in the lush fields and hear the gentle chime of cowbells echoing through the crisp air. It is more than just a viewpoint; it is a place where you can truly feel the essence of Hokkaido's dairy farming heritage.
The greatest draw is undoubtedly the panoramic view. On clear days, the beautiful ridgeline of Mount Komagatake and the distant profile of Hakodateyama appear vividly against the sky. As night falls, the lights of the Hakodate area spread out like scattered jewels, offering a completely different atmosphere than the daytime. From early summer to autumn, the sight of cattle grazing amidst lush green pastures creates a quintessential Hokkaido landscape that is deeply peaceful.
The observatory is primarily accessible from May to October. The scenery changes dramatically with the seasons: from the vibrant green pastures of early summer to the golden hues of autumn. While daytime visits offer bright, natural panoramas, nighttime visits are perfect for seeing the sparkling city lights. Please note that the observatory itself is typically closed from late October to April, and the access road (Shirotaike Skyline) is closed from mid-November to late April. Plan your visit accordingly to ensure access.
This is an ideal destination for a scenic drive. Traveling along the Shirotaike Skyline toward the high-altitude viewpoint provides a dynamic and ever-changing landscape. Within the pasture, you can observe cattle living freely in the vast greenery, offering a glimpse into the daily life of Hokkaido's nature-integrated farming culture.
The area is close to several attractions around Onuma Quasi-National Park and the shores of Lake Onuma. It serves as an excellent base for those wishing to enjoy sightseeing boat cruises or other nature-based activities in the Onuma area. Additionally, it is easily accessible from Hakodate City, making it a perfect addition to a driving itinerary while exploring the Hakodate region.
Because the observatory is at an elevation of 550m, temperatures tend to be lower than in the lowlands. Please bring appropriate clothing for the altitude. The Shirotaike Skyline is a mountain road with several steep gradients; please drive with caution.
