Shirono-e Botanical Garden
9 min readOverview & Highlights
Shirono-e Botanical Garden is a nature-rich botanical park located on the eastern side of Moji-ku, Kitakyushu, which marks the easternmost edge of Kyushu. Situated on a gentle hill overlooking the Suo-nada Sea (part of the Seto Inland Sea), the park spans approximately 8 hectares. The terrain features beautiful, undulating paths that take advantage of the natural landscape. This park serves as a "healing space to touch nature," where visitors can enjoy a variety of plants, wildlife, and stunning scenery throughout the seasons within a Japanese-style natural garden.
History & Cultural Background
The history of this park dates back to around 1950, when it began as a private botanical garden called "Shiki-no-oka" (Hill of the Four Seasons). After many years as a private institution, it was reborn on April 7, 1996, as the "Kitakyushu Municipal Shirono-e Botanical Garden." Over the 30+ years since its establishment as a public park, it has been cherished and preserved as a vital center for nature education and community relaxation.

Key Attractions
The garden features a wide variety of plants that change their expression with every season. You can discover something new every time you visit: cherry blossoms and tulips in the spring, vibrant greenery in early summer, colorful autumn foliage, and the serene, quiet landscapes of winter. The walking paths, designed to follow the natural topography, offer a delightful experience as your perspective changes with the elevation, allowing you to view the plants alongside the beautiful view of the Suo-nada Sea. Special exhibitions of rare plants that only appear during specific seasons are also held in the plant display areas.
Recommended Seasons & Times
The best time to visit depends on what you wish to see. Spring (March–May) is the most spectacular time when flowers are in full bloom. Summer offers a lush, deep green landscape full of life. Autumn (September–November) is the season for colorful foliage. For the best experience, we recommend visiting in the early morning when the air is crisp and the plants look most refreshing. Toward the evening, the changing light creates a more dramatic and beautiful atmosphere.

Experiences & Activities
Beyond simple strolls, the park hosts various seasonal events. For example, the "Botanical Market" in spring allows visitors to engage more closely with plant life. There are also educational programs and plant lectures to deepen your botanical knowledge. Additionally, there is a charming, retro-style cafe space on the grounds. On Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays, and public holidays, you can enjoy a relaxing time with a drink or ice cream.
Surrounding Area
Shirono-e Botanical Garden is located on the eastern side of the Moji area, which is dotted with historical sightseeing spots. You can enjoy a scenic drive along the coast or a stroll by the seaside nearby. It is an excellent addition to any travel itinerary exploring the history and nature of Kitakyushu.
