Shiroishigawa Tsutsumi Hitome Senbonzakura is a massive cherry blossom avenue stretching along the Shiroishi River in Miyagi Prefecture. The area is famous for its approximately 1,200 Somei Yoshino cherry trees, some over 100 years old, lining the riverbanks. The name "Hitome Senbonzakura" literally means "one thousand cherry trees seen at a glance," reflecting the breathtaking scale of the scenery. In spring, the harmony between the flowing river and the soft pink blossoms creates a truly magical atmosphere.
The history of this cherry blossom path is deeply rooted in the Taisho era. In 1923 (the 12th year of the Taisho era), Kaijiro Takayama, a native of Ogawara, donated over 1,000 Somei Yoshino trees. These trees were planted along the embankments following the completion of the Shiroishi River flood control works. Since then, the trees have been carefully preserved and nurtured by local volunteers and students from nearby schools. Today, it is recognized as one of Japan's "Top 100 Famous Cherry Blossom Spots."
The greatest attraction is the magnificent tunnel of cherry blossoms that follows the curve of the Shiroishi River embankment. The density of the 1,200 blooming trees creates a powerful visual impact that can be seen from a distance. Beyond the spring blossoms, the area offers different natural beauty in winter, when migratory birds such as swans, geese, and ducks visit the river islets. During the peak bloom in spring, the area becomes a vibrant and lively destination for tourists.
The best time to visit is typically from early to mid-April, when the Somei Yoshino trees reach full bloom. Daytime is ideal for enjoying the vivid colors of the blossoms under the sunlight. You can also enjoy the local atmosphere during seasonal events like the "Shibata Sakura Festival" or the "Ogawara Sakura Festival." The Shiroishigawa Tsutsumi Hitome Senbonzakura area spans across Ogawara and Shibata towns. Nearby historical sites, such as the Funaoka Castle Ruins, are also worth visiting. Additionally, upstream from the Shiroishi River lies the Shichikashuku Dam, a scenic spot selected as one of the top 100 dam lakes in Japan.
If you use the parking lots along the riverbank, a fee of 1,000 JPY is required. We highly recommend bringing cash (JPY) as card payments may not be available.
