Shiroishi Castle is a flatland-mountain castle located within Masuoka Park in the center of Shiroishi City, Miyagi Prefecture. It holds a significant place in history as the residence of the Katakura clan, who served as high-ranking retainers to the Date family. The castle's greatest attraction is the "Three-Story Yagura" (Castle Tower), which was faithfully reconstructed in 1995. Despite modern building regulations, this grand wooden structure was granted special certification and stands as one of the largest wooden reconstructions in Japan. Visitors can enjoy a multi-faceted historical experience through its striking exterior, detailed interior exhibits, and cutting-edge digital technology.
Since 1602, Shiroishi Castle served as a vital stronghold for the Katakura clan under the Sendai Domain. It is a significant site that was even granted an exception to the "One Castle per Province" edict by the Tokugawa Shogunate, allowing it to survive. Although the original structure was dismantled during the Meiji era, the three-story tower and the main gates were reconstructed in the Heisei era to honor the legacy of Katakura Kojuro Kagenaga. The castle also played a crucial role during the Boshin War of the Meiji Restoration, serving as a site where important political alliances were forged during a turning point in Japanese history.
The Shiroishi Castle History Exploration Museum is organized across three floors. The 1st floor features a shop selling local Shiroish products and exclusive castle merchandise, alongside a restaurant. The 2nd floor houses the History Museum, where you can view a 1/100 scale model of the castle and detailed panels explaining the reconstruction process. It also displays authentic armor, swords, and matchlock guns associated with the Katakura clan, offering a deep look into the lifestyle and warfare of the era. The 3rd floor features a high-definition 3D theater with a 200-inch screen, providing an immersive-visual experience of the castle's epic history.
The area around Shiroishi Castle (Masuoka Park) offers beautiful scenery throughout the seasons. In spring, the surrounding park is filled with lush greenery, creating a beautiful contrast with the historic architecture. Because the museum and 3D theater are indoor facilities, the site is an excellent destination for sightseeing regardless of weather, making it a great option during rainy days or hot summer months. We recommend a leisurely stroll in the late afternoon to imagine the historical scenes of the past. Please note that the final entry to the museum is 30 minutes before closing.
