Shiroyazaki Lighthouse, located in Shiroyazaki, Higashidori Village, Aomori Prefecture, is a historic Western-style lighthouse completed in 1876 (Meiji 9). The structure is characterized by its impressive brick construction, which took 3 years and 4 months to complete, standing 33 meters tall from the ground to the top. In 2022, it was officially designated as a National Important Cultural Property. The surrounding area offers a unique and picturesque view where the lighthouse meets the natural landscape of the Shimokita Peninsula, featuring local Kandachi horses grazing freely in the fields.
This lighthouse played a vital role in supporting Japanese maritime shipping during the early Meiji era. Known as the tallest brick lighthouse in Japan, it showcases exceptionally high-level masonry and engineering techniques of the time. It has also been selected as a Civil Engineering Heritage site by the Japan Society of Civil Engineers, serving as a precious cultural asset that conveys the technological progress of Japan's modernization. For many years, it has stood as a guardian of the sea routes at the eastern edge of the Shimokita Peninsula.
The primary draw is the historic brick exterior and internal structure. During guided tours, visitors can observe the heart of the lighthouse, including the light distribution adjustment lenses and arc lamp equipment. Additionally, the surrounding grounds provide a serene environment where you can observe the Kandichi horses grazing in a lush, natural setting. The technical prowess of the site is also notable, with a light intensity of 530,000 candela and a visibility range of approximately 34 km, which has long supported maritime safety in the region.
Lighthouse tours are typically conducted from mid-April to early November. Please note that the lighthouse is closed during the winter season (from early November to mid-April), so plan your visit accordingly. The scenery changes beautifully with the seasons: from the vibrant blues and greens of spring and summer to the tranquil, subdued landscapes of autumn. Tours are often held in two sessions (morning and afternoon), so we recommend checking the schedule based on the day's weather and your preferred time.
