The Shiretoko Pass Observatory is a scenic viewpoint located at an altitude of 738m within Shiretoko National Park, Hokkaido. It sits at the highest point of National Route 334, commonly known as the "Shiretoko Transversal Road," which connects Utoro Town in Shari and Rausu Town. From this vantage point, you can gaze directly at the magnificent Mt. Rausa, the centerpiece of the Shiretoko mountain range. It is one of Hokkaido's most iconic locations, offering a stunning panorama of the vast forest and the surrounding ocean.
The area is part of the Shiretoko National Park, a designated UNESCO World Natural Heritage site, preserving a pristine and untouched natural environment. Shiretoko Pass serves as a vital route traversing the Shiretoko Peninsula and has long been recognized as a place that embodies both the harshness and the sublime beauty of nature. The surrounding ecosystem is incredibly rich and is strictly protected as a national park to maintain its biological diversity.
The greatest highlight is the overwhelming presence of Mt. Rausu rising directly before your eyes. The sharp, dramatic silhouette of Mt. Rausu changes its expression with the seasons and weather, leaving visitors in awe. From the observatory, you can also see the continuous mountain ranges of Shiretoko and the deep green sea of trees spreading out below. In clear weather, the view is so expansive that you can feel the boundary between the distant sea and the sky.
Please note that the pass is closed during the winter season. Sightseeing is highly recommended from May to October. The scenery changes significantly with the seasons: you can enjoy the vibrant colors of fresh greenery in spring/early summer or the brilliant autumn foliage. During bright daylight hours, the details of Mt. Rausu are clearly visible, and if the weather is clear, you will be treated to an exceptionally sharp and wide panoramic view.
Most visitors stop here as a scenic break during a drive. The primary activity is simply admiring the grand landscape from the observatory. The area is part of a larger travel route that includes nearby spots like the Shiretoko Goko Lakes and the Shiretoko Nature Center, allowing for a deep dive into Shiretoko's nature. Additionally, the nearby Rausu Onsen area offers hot springs and nature observation facilities to relax after your explorations.
There are numerous spots nearby to fully enjoy the Shiretoko experience. For instance, at the Shiretoko Goko Lakes, you can walk through primeval forests while enjoying the view of the lakes. If you continue toward the Rausu side, you will find relaxing hot spring spots such as Rausu Onsen and Rausu Geyser. You can also learn more about the local ecosystem at facilities like the Shiretoko Nature Center.
Because the observatory is at a high altitude, temperatures tend to be much lower than at sea level. We strongly recommend bringing warm clothing or a light jacket, especially if it is windy. While the parking area is free, please remember to take all your trash back with you to preserve the environment. While the facility itself is free, it is useful to have cash or a transportation IC card ready for any nearby services or travel-related expenses.
