Shirakimine Kogen is a stunning scenic plateau located on the slopes of Mt. Gokehara (elevation 1,057m) in Isahaya, Nagasaki Prefecture. Situated at an altitude of approximately 350m, this vast area of about 10,000 square meters transforms into a colorful tapestry of flowers each season. It is renowned as one of the prefecture's premier floral destinations, featuring roughly 100,000 rapeseed flowers in the spring and 200,000 cosmos flowers in the autumn. As you feel the refreshing highland breeze, you can enjoy a panoramic view of Isahaya Bay and the Unzen mountain range below.
The region deeply values its rich natural environment and the changing seasons. The greatest draw of Shirakimine Kogen is its expansive flower fields that change expression with the seasons. In spring, the contrast between the bright yellow rapeseed flowers and the delicate cherry blossoms is breathtaking. In autumn, a vibrant carpet of pink, white, red, and deep purple cosmos—comprising 20 different varieties—covers the landscape. Additionally, the "Cosmos Flower Space Museum" is a unique facility combining an observatory and an art gallery. With a 270-degree panoramic view and a stunning glass-walled hall, you can experience the connection between the heavens and the earth. Visitors can enjoy stargazing in the astronomical observation room or admiring art in the gallery.
Each season offers a completely different experience at Shirakime Kogen. Spring (rapeseed and cherry blossoms) and Autumn (cosmos season) are the best times to witness the most colorful landscapes. The sunrise here is also exceptional; many people visit on New Year's Day to witness the sun rising over Isahaya Bay and the Unzen mountains. The shifting colors of the sky during dawn and dusk are a unique charm of this highland.
