The Mother Tree is the iconic symbol of the Shirakami Sanchi mountain range. This massive beech tree, estimated to be 400 years old, is characterized by its vast, sprawling branches and lush green foliage that seems to touch the sky. To protect the delicate natural environment, a wooden deck has been installed, allowing visitors to experience the tree's incredible vitality safely and up close.
Shirakami Sanchi is a vast mountain range spanning the southwestern part of Aomori Prefecture and the northwestern part of Akita Prefecture. In 1993, it was registered as Japan's first UNESCO World Natural Heritage site. The area surrounding the Mother Tree is part of a precious, pristine ecosystem featuring ancient beech forests that have remained largely untouched by human influence. Historically, the people of this region, known as "Matagi" (traditional hunters), have lived in harmony with this abundant nature, fostering a unique culture. The Mother Tree stands as a living monument to the deep history of this land.
The primary attraction is the breathtaking view of the Mother Tree itself. Looking up from the wooden deck at the sprawling canopy is a truly awe-inspiring sight. Additionally, slightly further along the path, there is an observation point offering views of Mount Iwaki and Mount Odate. This makes it one of the premier photo spots in Shirakami Sanchi, where you can capture the harmony between the ancient beech tree and the distant mountain ranges.
The Mother Tree reveals a different face to visitors throughout the seasons. From spring to summer, you can enjoy a world of vibrant, lush greenery. In autumn, the forest transforms into a spectacular display of colorful foliage unique to the beech trees. Visiting in the bright daylight hours is highly recommended to fully enjoy the natural scenery and the changing colors of the forest.
The path to the Mother Tree is a relatively short and accessible route, approximately 300 meters from Tsugaru Pass, making it an easy stroll to feel close to nature. Using the wooden deck, you can almost feel the life force of the tree. A slow walk through the forest, observing the small plants on the forest floor, provides a perfect opportunity for forest bathing (shinrin-yoku) to clear your mind. The surrounding area also offers views of the World Heritage mountain range, providing a deep sense of unity with nature.
There are several facilities in the Shirakami Sanchi area dedicated to nature learning and tourism. For example, the "Shirakami Sanchi Visitor Center" offers an immersive experience through large-scale video presentations that teach visitors about the seasons and the ecosystem of the beech forests. Other nearby attractions include the beautiful Lake Juniko and various facilities for nature-based activities, allowing for a full day of exploration.
