Shiraito Falls is a unique geological wonder where Mt. Fuji's snowmelt emerges from the boundary between the permeable Shin-Fuji volcanic layer and the impermeable Ko-Fuji volcanic layer. This results in water seeping through the cliff face, creating a spectacular sight. The water cascades down a curved cliff 20m high and 150m wide in hundreds of small and large streams, resembling white silk threads—hence the name "Shiraito" (White Thread). The site is designated as a national scenic beauty and a natural monument, and is also selected as one of Japan's Top 100 Waterfalls.
The waterfall is formed by the natural spring water of Mt. Fuji and has been cherished by people for centuries. Its unique geological feature is the way water emerges from the boundary of the volcanic layers of Mt. Fuji. This site is highly valued as a precious regional landmark where the raw, beautiful forms of nature have been preserved over time.
The greatest attraction is the sheer scale of the waterfall, spanning 150m in width. The sight of water flowing like white threads between the rock walls is truly iconic. Near the base of the falls, there is an area where the water creates a natural arch-like space, allowing visitors to enjoy the powerful water flow. Throughout the year, approximately 1.5 tons of water flow out every second, with the water temperature remaining a constant and refreshing 12°C.
Shiraito Falls is accessible year-round. Regardless of the season, you can enjoy the continuous flow of Mt. Fuji's spring water. While the area is accessible 24 hours a day, visiting during daylight hours is highly recommended to see the white water streams shimmering in the sunlight. Early morning or evening visits offer a more serene and quiet atmosphere, though visibility of the white threads may be lower.
The primary activity here is observing the magnificent natural landscape. By walking closer to the base of the falls, you can experience the breathtaking view of the water streams up close. Observing the vertical lines of water created by the natural spring water of Mt. Fuji is a one-of-a-kind experience.
The area around Shiraito Falls is well-equipped with facilities such as parking lots and tourist information. There is a walking path from the parking area to the viewing areas, allowing you to move easily toward the waterfall to enjoy the view. The surrounding area is rich in nature and offers a great opportunity to see the unique topography related to Mt. Fuji's spring water.
