Shiori Pass is a mountain pass located at an altitude of 1,065m in Uonuma City, Niigata Prefecture. This location is famous for a rare and spectacular phenomenon known as 'Takigumo' (waterfall clouds). From late summer through October, a sea of clouds accumulates in the valleys and flows over the mountain ridges like a cascading waterfall. This phenomenon occurs during sunrise, creating a deeply spiritual and mystical landscape. To ensure visitors can enjoy this view, observation viewpoints have been established around the parking area.
The area holds significant historical value. When the Takada Clan began silver mining in the region, the nearby Sakamoto served as a thriving post town. Following the start of silver mining in 1675, Shiori Pass became a vital transport route. While the path declined after the silver mines closed, the pass remained important during the Meiji era for transporting forest resources and later as a transport route during the construction of the Oku-Adachi Dam. Today, it is cherished as a place to witness the profound beauty of natural phenomena within a historic landscape.
The ultimate highlight is the 'Takigumo' phenomenon. Watching the sea of clouds spill over the peaks like a massive waterfall is a once-in-a-lifetime sight. You can observe this easily from the well-maintained viewpoints near the parking lot. Additionally, the 'Old Shiori Pass' (Silver Road) was designated as a cultural property in 2003 and remains a popular route for hikers looking to explore the area's history.
The best time to witness the Takigumo is from late summer through October, specifically at sunrise. Because the phenomenon is tied to the sunrise, arriving very early is essential. Please note that during the winter season (approximately December to May), the roads are subject to full closures due to heavy snowfall, so please check road conditions before traveling.
Beyond landscape photography, the area is a hub for outdoor enthusiasts. Every summer, a hill climb race is held, starting from Oyu Onsen at the foot of the mountain and finishing at Shiori Pass, covering a total of 14km with a 750m elevation gain. In the past, shuttle buses have even been operated specifically to help tourists observe the Takigumo phenomenon, highlighting the area's popularity for nature-based tourism.
The area serves as a gateway to various mountain trails, including the trailhead for Mt. Echigo Komagatake. At the foot of the mountains, you can find relaxing hot spring facilities such as Oyu Onsen. The 'Oku-Adachi Silver Line' runs parallel to the area; while it is a smooth road without many curves, please note that motorcycles and pedestrians are prohibited on this specific road.
