Mount Shiroudetoshi is a 352.1-meter peak located on the Shonai Peninsula in western Kagawa Prefecture. Part of the Seto Inland Sea National Park, the summit area is a beautifully maintained park. This location is a renowned observation spot offering breathtaking views of the many islands in the Seto Inland Sea and has been featured in international media. It is a place where visitors can observe the changing seasons through its flora, particularly the vibrant cherry blossoms in spring and the lush hydrangeas in early summer.
The name 'Shiroudetoshi' is tied to local folklore. According to legend, the name originates from a story involving Urashima Taro; it is said that the smoke from the treasure box he opened turned into purple clouds that draped over the mountain. Statues related to this legend can be found in the area. Geologically, the area features residual hills and a geological structure related to Miocene volcanic activity.
The summit is developed as a park, providing an expansive view of the Seto Inland Sea islands from the observation decks. The scenery changes dramatically with the seasons: the pink hues of spring cherry blossoms, the refreshing colors of early summer hydrangeas, the vibrant autumn leaves, and the crisp, clear views of winter. Near the summit, one can also observe outcrops of andesitic volcanic rock, showcasing the unique geological characteristics of the area. A second-order triangulation station is also located at the peak.
The changing landscape is the highlight of this destination. From March to April, the cherry blossom season draws many visitors. From June to July, the hydrangeas reach their peak bloom. In late autumn, the foliage turns beautiful colors, and in winter, the clear air provides excellent visibility for distant views. For the best experience, it is recommended to visit on stable weather days or during times when the air is particularly clear to maximize the view of the Seto Inland Sea.
A paved road leads directly to the summit, making it easy to reach the top by car. For those seeking more physical activity, there are well-maintained hiking routes. You can choose between the southern route from the Ohama area or the northern route from the Hakotoge pass. Since it is a relatively low mountain (approx. 300m altitude), these hikes are manageable for most fitness levels. The northern trailhead at Hakotoge also connects to a hiking path leading toward the Misaki cape.
