Shio Misaki Lighthouse is a striking white landmark located in Kushimoto, Wakayama Prefecture, marking the southern tip of Honshu island. Since its first lighting in 1873, it has served as a vital maritime beacon for over a century. Standing 22.51m tall atop a 30m cliff, the structure creates a dramatic silhouette against the vast Pacific Ocean. Designed by British engineer Richard H. Blanton, it is designated as an A-rank preserved lighthouse of high historical value.
The lighthouse was one of eight Western-style lighthouses built during the early Meiji era to modernize Japan's maritime-related infrastructure. Due to its historical significance, it is recognized as one of Japan's top 50 lighthouses. It has played a crucial role in ensuring the safety of maritime traffic and supporting the development of modern Japanese sea routes. It remains a cherished cultural and scenic heritage of the region.
The primary draw is the lighthouse structure itself, perched on a cliff, offering a panoramic view of the Pacific Ocean. Climbing the 68 stone spiral steps leads you to an observation point where the horizon stretches endlessly. While the lighthouse is accessible year-round, the scenery changes beautifully with the seasons. The periods from March to May and October to November often offer stable weather and clear visibility.
