The Shiotara Cliffs (Misaki Columnar Jointing) are a magnificent natural sculpture located on the western coast of Ikitsuki Island in Hirado City, Nagasaki Prefecture. This landscape features a unique topography of regular, vertical rock columns known as "columnar jointing," formed by ancient volcanic activity. Stretching approximately 500 meters in length and rising 20 meters high, the honeycomb-like structure of the rock faces is a symbol of natural geometric beauty and has been selected as one of Nagasaki's top scenic spots. The sight of these tiered, jagged rocks being weathered by the relentless waves of the Genkai Sea offers a truly overwhelming experience for visitors.
The columnar jointing seen here was formed during the cooling process of magma following volcanic activity. Over countless years, the relentless waves of the Genkai Sea have carved and polished these rocks into the distinct shapes visible today. Ikitsuki Island itself is a region rich in both natural beauty and history, and these cliffs serve as a vital part of the island's natural heritage and landscape.
The greatest draw is the view of the "Misaki Columnar Jointing," where perfectly aligned, vertical rock columns create a rhythmic pattern. Depending on the angle of the sun, the rock faces present a constantly changing expression. From the observation points above the cliffs, you can enjoy a panoramic view of the deep blue Genkai Sea contrasted against the bright sky and the white lighthouse, creating a stunning visual harmony between the sea and the stone.
While the Shiotara Cliffs offer different moods throughout the year, the view is particularly striking on clear, sunny days when the contrast between the blue sea, the gray rock textures, and the green coastal vegetation is most vivid. Bright daylight is ideal for photography to capture the intricate details of the columnar structures. Additionally, because the cliffs face west, the late afternoon and evening hours are highly recommended, as the setting sun illuminates the cliffs with a dramatic, golden light.
The primary way to enjoy this site is through scenic observation. There are observation points where you can gaze down at the powerful, sheer cliffs from a safe distance. For a more immersive experience, the nearby "Ikitsuki Sunset Way" is a famous seaside driving route that allows you to enjoy the coastal scenery from your car. You can also explore the area around the Obae Lighthouse, which is a perfect spot to feel the raw power of the island's nature.
When visiting the cliffs, we highly recommend a stop at the Obae Lighthouse. Located about a 7-minute drive from the cliffs, it is a short 5-minute walk from the parking area. The lighthouse offers a spectacular view of the western coast of Ikitsuki Island. Furthermore, the island offers local culinary delights such as "Kasudose" (a traditional sweet) and
