Shiobara Valley is a breathtaking scenic area located in Nasu-Shiobara City, Tochigi Prefecture. Situated within the Nikko National Park, this area is dotted with spots designed to engage all your senses, including thrilling suspension bridges, scenic viewpoints, and relaxing foot baths. The well-maintained walking trails allow you to enjoy a peaceful stroll while gazing at majestic waterfalls and deep valleys. Key highlights include the stunning Tomeharu Falls and Kaiko Falls, as well as the excitement of crossing high suspension bridges.
The name "Tomeharu Falls" carries a unique history; it is said that in the past, the water would dry up for three months during winter, and the waterfall would only reappear in late spring. Although the water flows continuously today, the name serves as a reminder of the area's natural cycles. The surrounding area also features names tied to its unique topography, such as the "Saruiwa Enchi" (Monkey Rock Park), named after rock formations that resemble toad/frog shapes.
There are several must-see spots within Shiobara Valley. One of the most popular is the 20-meter-long Tomeharu Suspension Bridge, which offers a unique perspective of the valley from high above. Another significant landmark is the Kaiko Falls, which boasts a spectacular 40-meter drop, accompanied by observation decks for viewing. Additionally, the trails feature various viewpoints and foot baths (ashiyu), allowing visitors to rest and rejuvenate while immersed in nature.
Shiobara Valley reveals a different face with every season. The area is particularly beautiful during times of lush greenery or vibrant autumn colors, making it an ideal spot for forest bathing. You can experience the refreshing flow of waterfalls in spring, the cool valley breezes in summer, the brilliant autumn foliage in fall, and the serene, snow-covered landscapes in winter. While there are no specific operating hours, we recommend visiting during daylight hours to enjoy the natural scenery.
Visitors can enjoy hiking along the established paths or engaging in nature observation. Whether it is the thrill of crossing a suspension bridge, the breathtaking views from an observation deck, or the relaxation of a warm foot bath, there are many ways to connect with the environment. The combination of the sound of rushing water, the scent of forest plants, and the dramatic geological formations provides a deeply immersive sensory experience.
The area surrounding Shiobara Valley is part of the vast, beautiful Nasu region. Nearby natural landmarks include Mt. Mitsumochi and Numahara, which serve as excellent bases for more serious mountaineering and trekking. Furthermore, the nearby Shiobara Onsenkyo (Hot Spring Village) allows you to combine a day of hiking with a relaxing soak in a traditional hot spring.
As you will be walking through a natural environment, comfortable walking shoes and active clothing are highly recommended. When using the foot baths or viewpoints, please be mindful of the surrounding environment. Please note that certain sections (such as the path between Tomeharu Falls and the right bank of the Kaiko Suspension Bridge) may occasionally be closed due to maintenance. Additionally, check local traffic updates for Route 120, as construction may occur. While most of the valley area is free to access, please carry cash or a card if you plan to use nearby commercial facilities or services.
