The Shinonoi Line Former Track (Akemata Abandoned Railway) is a scenic walking course built upon the site of the former JNR Shinonoi Line, which was decommissioned in 1988 following a route change. Located in the northeastern part of Azumino City, this path allows visitors to walk through history while being embraced by nature. The most striking feature is the magnificent avenue of approximately 30,000 zelkova trees that line the path. Because the former railway track provides a wide, flat space, you can enjoy a peaceful hike in a quiet environment free from vehicle exhaust.
This location was once a vital part of the JR East Shinonoi Line. The area has a rich history, having served as a signal station starting in 1961 before the route was altered in 1988. Today, the section from Akemata Station to the former Dai-ni Shirasaka Tunnel has been beautifully maintained by Azumino City as a public walking trail. As you walk, you can almost feel the presence of the steam locomotives that once passed through, especially when observing the historic brickwork of the Urushikubo Tunnel.
The highlight of this course is undoubtedly the vast zelkova tree avenue. The scenery changes beautifully with the seasons, offering a striking linear path for walkers. Another must-see is the Urushikubo Tunnel, which features an artistic brick arch structure that serves as a significant relic of Japan's railway history. Along the way, you may also spot remnants of the railway era, such as old signals, and discover sites related to the local
