Shin-Yashima Aquarium, originally located on the heights of Mt. Yashima in Takamatsu, Kagawa, is currently undergoing a major renovation. From April 7, 2025, for approximately two years, the aquarium is operating as the 'Ichiba Aquarium' located in the former fruit and vegetable building of the Takamatsu Central Wholesale Market. This temporary setup maintains the essence of the original aquarium, known for its close-up interactions with marine life and its ability to let visitors feel the rhythm of the ocean. A more advanced and evolved version of the facility is scheduled to reopen in Spring 2027.
The original aquarium was famous for being one of the few high-altitude aquariums in Japan, situated at an elevation of approximately 300 meters on Mt. Yashima. To facilitate a complete facility renewal, the aquarium has transitioned into this temporary 'Ichiba Aquarium' format. This period serves as a transitional chapter in the aquarium's history, allowing the preservation of its educational mission within the lively, bustling environment of a central wholesale market.
During its current operation as the Ichiba Aquarium, the facility utilizes the former fruit and vegetable building of the Takamatsu Central Wholesale Market. While the specific types of marine life on display may vary depending on the season and operational status, the core philosophy remains: providing an intimate experience with marine creatures. Visitors can enjoy a one-of-a-kind atmosphere where the lively energy of a commercial market coexists with the serene world of aquatic life.
The Ichiba Aquarium is generally open from 10:00 to 16:00, with most visitors arriving in the early afternoon. While the exhibits are designed to be enjoyed year-round within the market environment, it is highly recommended to check the schedule for special events, such as 'Sea Creature Kamishibai' (paper play) storytelling, to make your visit more memorable. Please note that the facility is closed on Tuesdays (or the following Wednesday if Tuesday is a public holiday), so please verify the schedule before traveling.
During certain periods, the facility offers special programs such as 'Sea Creature Kamishibai' storytelling, which are popular with specific age groups. However, please be aware that some activities, such as certain feeding sessions, may be temporarily suspended due to measures against highly pathogenic avian influenza or other environmental factors. For the latest information on species on display and available programs, please refer to the official website.
As the 'Ichiba Aquarium' is currently located within the Takamatsu Central Wholesale Market, the surrounding area is a functional commercial zone. This creates a unique environment where the atmosphere of a working market blends with the aquarium exhibits—a distinct experience quite different from the original Mt. Yashima location.
