Shinkyo Bridge (Shinkyo) is a stunning bridge located in Nikko, Tochigi Prefecture, and is a significant structure of the Nikko Futarasan Shrine. The vibrant vermilion color of the bridge creates a breathtaking contrast against the deep green foliage and the natural gorge, forming an iconic symbol of Nikko's landscape. Historically, it was also known as "Mihashi" or "Yamasuge no Jabashi." The history of Shinkyo is ancient, with legends suggesting it was established through mystical origins during the late Nara period. The current structure was rebuilt in its present form in 1636 (Kanei 13). For centuries, it has been revered as a sacred bridge, used exclusively for Shinto rituals or when high-ranking officials, such as the Shogun or imperial messengers, visited the shrine. Because of its sacred status, ordinary travelers used a temporary bridge (Nikko Bridge) downstream. Shinkyo is considered one of Japan's three most famous unique bridges (alongside Kintai and Saru bridges) and is a rare historical example of a bridge designed for mountain gorges.
The greatest appeal lies in the sight of the brilliant vermilion bridge nestled within a landscape of deep green forests and ethereal mist. The bridge measures 28 meters in length, 7.4 meters in width, and stands 10.6 meters above the water surface. The railings feature 10 main pillars decorated with ornamental finials (giboshi), and the underside is finished in black lacquer while the surface is a striking vermilion.
