Geju Teiju Sokushin Jutaku is a five-story municipal housing complex located in Rikuzentakata City, Iwate Prefecture, along National Route 45. Situated to the east of the Takata Matsubara Tsunami Reconstruction Memorial Park, this building has been preserved as a 'disaster heritage site' to physically document the impact of the Great East Japan Earthquake. To ensure safety, a fence has been installed around the building, and visitors are asked to observe the structure from the outside.
This residence serves as a vital historical record of the immense damage suffered by the local community. During the disaster, the tsunami reached heights of 14.5 meters; records indicate that the water completely submerged the building up to the 4th floor, with waves reaching the floor level of the 5th story. It is maintained today as a permanent monument to convey the scale of the disaster and the reality of the event to future generations.
The most striking feature is the five-story structure itself and the unmistakable marks left by the seawater. The exterior of the building, which shows evidence of being submerged up to the 4th floor, serves as a powerful visual testament to the sheer force of the tsunami. While entry into the building is strictly prohibited, visitors can clearly observe the building's architecture and the extent of the inundation from behind the safety fence.
As this is an outdoor observation site, your experience will depend on the weather. Visiting during daylight hours is highly recommended, as the bright light makes it much easier to identify the different floors and the structural details of the building. On clear, sunny days, the textures and watermarks on the exterior are most visible.
The primary activity here is observational learning. While you cannot enter the building, standing outside the fence allows you to grasp the scale of the disaster by seeing exactly how high the water rose against the residential structure. It serves as a profound site for field research and reflection on the history of the region.
The site is located very close to the Takata Matsubara Tsunami Reconstruction Memorial Park. Since it sits right along National Route 45, it is easily accessible by car. The area is home to several facilities dedicated to preserving the memory of the disaster; visiting these in conjunction with this site will provide a deeper understanding of the region's journey toward reconstruction and resilience.
We recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes. Most visitors arrive by car and use the nearby parking areas. Please note that entry into the building is strictly forbidden; you must remain outside the perimeter fence at all times. We ask that you respect the solemnity of the site and observe the ruins quietly.
