The history of Shimokitazawa dates back to the Meiji era. Originally an agricultural area, the region grew into a commercial hub following the opening of Shimokitazawa Station in 1927 and the Keio Inokashira Line in 1933. The area's development was shaped by its unique topography; the low-lying land south of the station favored commercial development over residential use.
A defining characteristic of the town is its intricate network of narrow alleys. These narrow streets were a byproduct of rapid commercial growth where public space planning could not keep pace, yet they have become the very soul of the district. This labyrinthine layout creates a
