Shimoda Ropeway is a premier sightseeing facility located on Mt. Nesugata in Shimoda City, Shizuoka Prefecture, offering breathtaking natural scenery and grand vistas. Opened on November 1, 1961, the Shimoda Ropeway has been a beloved attraction for travelers visiting the Izu Peninsula for decades. Following extensive renovations between 2018 and 2019, the facility has been reborn with a more sophisticated atmosphere. Notably, the gondola design incorporates the elegant design philosophy of 'THE ROYAL EXPRESS,' a luxury train operated by the Izukyu Line, providing a high-end and graceful transit experience. The ropeway plays a vital role in sharing the beauty of Shimoda's nature with visitors while preserving its natural charm.
The greatest draw is the overwhelming view from the summit of Mt. Nesugata. As you ascend, the view opens up to reveal the stunning coastline centered around Shimoda Port, framed by the surrounding green mountains. The summit also features historical spots such as the Aisen Myoo-do shrine, allowing visitors to enjoy both nature and culture. In summer, you can enjoy the grand scenery where the sky and sea seem to merge amidst a refreshing sea breeze. Autumn brings a palette of seasonal colors, while winter offers a serene and mystical landscape. Keep an eye out for seasonal flora such as the white Rhododendron (Shakunage) and the fragrant Night-blooming Jasmine (Nioi-banmatsuri). While the blue sea is most striking during bright daylight hours, we recommend visiting during specific seasons to fully appreciate the changing colors of the local flora.

As the summit is at a higher elevation, it can be windier than the ground level. We recommend wearing comfortable clothing suitable for light walking. If you plan to use the dog run, please note that it is intended for small dogs to play off-leash (please follow all posted rules). While there is a free parking lot dedicated to ropeway users, please note that it closes after operating hours, so please plan your time accordingly. To preserve the natural environment, please practice good etiquette and show consideration for other visitors.
