Shimizu Tanada is a beautiful terraced rice field located in Shimizu, Tokamachi City, Niigata Prefecture, at an altitude of approximately 400 meters. From this vantage point, visitors can enjoy a magnificent view of Mt. Kuroki, a prominent peak in the Kashiwagi region and one of Niigata's 100 famous mountains. This area holds a unique history; following significant damage from an earthquake in 2011, the landscape was restored using a specialized engineering method designed to preserve the traditional 'Satoyama' (rural landscape) aesthetic. Today, it also serves as a vital field for the 'Matsudai Tanada Bank' community activities.
The area was significantly impacted by the Northern Nagano Earthquake on March 12, 2011. The seismic activity caused a large-scale landslide, measuring roughly 500m in length and 100m in width, which devastated the Shimizu rice terraces. To protect the precious landscape and prevent future disasters, a specialized restoration project was undertaken. A rare technique known as the "Parallel Embankment Contour Division Method" was used to ensure the reconstruction did not disrupt the natural beauty of the countryside. The restoration was completed in 2013, and rice cultivation has since successfully resumed.
The terraced structure, meticulously carved into the terrain, harmonizes perfectly with the surrounding mountains. From the 400m altitude, the majestic silhouette of Mt. Kuroki is clearly visible. The rice cultivation here relies on a natural cycle, utilizing spring water from the mountains. The scenery changes dramatically with the seasons, offering a different visual experience depending on the time of year and the stage of rice growth.
Rice cultivation activities typically begin in late April after the snow melts. Therefore, the most vibrant and lush scenery can be enjoyed from late spring through summer. Visitors will notice the landscape evolve as the rice grows, starting from the water-filled terraces in the spring to the lush green fields of summer. As this is an outdoor natural site, please be aware that the view is subject to weather conditions.
The area is a hub for the 'Matsudai Tanada Bank' community. By becoming a 'Tanada Owner' (sponsor), supporters can participate in rice-growing experiences and conservation activities, helping to preserve the traditional landscape for future generations.
The surrounding region is also known for its art, featuring works like "Mountain" from local art festivals. For those looking to stay overnight, nearby facilities such as the Matsudai Shiba Pass Onsen offer relaxing hot spring experiences.
As this is a natural outdoor environment, comfortable walking shoes are highly recommended. While there is parking available, please note that there are no public restrooms on-site; please check nearby facilities in advance. Since this is a rural area, please carry cash for any local expenses. Please respect the farmers by not stepping into the active rice paddies.
