Shimeitei Observatory is a scenic lookout located in Kosaka Town, Akita Prefecture, situated at an altitude of 630 meters. This location is famous for a unique visual phenomenon: from this vantage point, the shape of Lake Towada resembles a perfect heart. The observatory is highly accessible, located less than a 1-minute walk from the parking area, making it an easy stop for travelers. It is widely known as a premier spot to observe the natural beauty of Lake Towada and its surrounding environment.
In 1927 (Showa 2), a stone monument was erected to commemorate the selection of this location as one of the 'Eight Views of Japan' (Nihon Hakkei) in the lake category. This monument serves as a historical record, highlighting the long-standing appreciation for the area's exceptional landscape. The surrounding area is managed as a natural park, ensuring the preservation of this historic and beautiful scenery.
The most significant feature is the view of Lake Towada appearing in a heart shape. To get the best view of this shape, it is highly recommended to go up to the second floor of the observatory (accessible via stairs). While the view can also be enjoyed from the first floor, the elevated position provides a more dramatic perspective. The stone monument commemorating the 'Eight Views of Japan' is another important element that adds historical depth to your visit. Visitors can enjoy the changing colors of the surrounding vegetation and the shifting expressions of the lake surface throughout the seasons.
Shimeitei Observatory offers different landscapes throughout the year. From May to October, the colors of the surrounding trees and the lake surface change beautifully. However, please note that the observatory is closed during the winter season from mid-November to late April. Visiting during bright daylight hours is recommended, as the lake's heart shape and the surrounding topography are most clearly visible under sunlight.
The observatory offers a panoramic view of the entire Lake Towada area. Since the walk from the parking lot is very short, it is an ideal stop during a scenic drive. The surrounding environment includes paths that allow for a brief stroll through nature. Many visitors come here specifically to capture the iconic heart-shaped lake in photographs.
The observatory is located just past the Hakkapass Observatory along the Jukai Line and is only about a 1-minute drive from the nearby parking areas. It is a key part of the scenic driving routes around Lake Towada, nestled within a rich natural environment and well-maintained natural park sections.
As the observatory is at an altitude of 630 meters, temperatures may be lower than in the lowlands. Please prepare clothing suitable for the season and the elevation. Note that the observatory is closed from mid-November to late April. While there is no fee for the observatory itself, please carry cash or a card if you plan to use nearby facilities or services. English-language signage is limited, so checking information in advance is helpful. Photography of the scenery and the stone monument is permitted. Regarding accessibility, please note that the second floor is accessible via stairs, which may present challenges for those with mobility issues.
