Shimane Ocean Aquarium AQUAS is a unique marine facility located within the scenic Iwami Seaside Park, spanning the border of Hamada and Gotsu in Shimane Prefecture. Often simply called "AQUAS," the aquarium is characterized by its exhibits that leverage its stunning location facing the Sea of Japan. Visitors can enjoy a close-up look at marine life, including the rare white dolphin, and witness breathtaking performances by sea lions and seals that capture the hearts of all ages.
As a prefectural marine facility, AQUAS plays a vital role in educating the public about the natural environment and the ecology of marine life in the region. Nestled within the lush Iwami Seaside Park, the facility's design integrates seamlessly with the surrounding natural landscape. For many years, it has served as a center for deepening the understanding of local marine culture and the importance of preserving the natural environment.

The aquarium features a diverse range of marine life exhibits. The white dolphin display and the dynamic performances by sea lions and seals are the most popular programs, drawing crowds from all over. The layout is designed so that visitors can experience different "moods" of the ocean in each area, allowing for a detailed observation of the unique behaviors and ecosystems of various species. Depending on the season, special events and themed displays may also be held.
The facility is generally open from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM. We recommend visiting during the bright daylight hours to see the marine life at their most active. Depending on the season, you might encounter special events such as the "Marine Life Marche." Since specific performance times for sea lions and seals are scheduled throughout the day, we highly recommend checking the daily schedule upon arrival to ensure you don't miss the action.

Beyond simple observation, visitors can feel the vitality of the animals through live performances. In the past, the aquarium has hosted interactive activities like riddle-solving quizzes and themed exhibitions, providing intellectual stimulation that goes beyond just looking at tanks. It is an excellent place to learn about the complex mechanisms of the marine ecosystem through direct observation.
Located within Iwami Seaside Park, the aquarium is surrounded by beautiful coastal scenery. The park provides an excellent environment for a relaxing stroll, allowing you to experience the natural beauty of the Shimane coast alongside your visit to the aquarium. The area is a popular destination for both scenic drives and coastal walks.
While the facility is well-maintained for comfortable viewing, we recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes as you will be moving around the exhibits. For families traveling with infants, the facility offers amenities such as free stroller rentals, nursing rooms, and kids' rooms. The aquarium is also designed with accessibility in mind, featuring wheelchair-accessible entrances and multilingual audio guides.
