Guide
Shimanami Kaido is a spectacular route spanning approximately 140 km, consisting of beautiful coastlines and grand bridges that connect Onomichi in Hiroshima Prefecture to Imabari in Ehime Prefecture. Seven major bridges link the islands floating in the calm waters of the Seto Inland Sea. This route is celebrated as a 'holy land' for cyclists worldwide. Beyond the exhilarating experience of cycling over the ocean, you can witness the harmony between natural beauty and modern engineering, featuring stunning island vistas and significant civil engineering heritage.
The area has long developed as a vital maritime transport hub for the Seto Inland Sea. Along the route, you will find industrial heritage sites and historic buildings that tell the story of the region's modernization. Elements such as architecture influenced by Kenzo Tange and the history of local copper mines provide a deep cultural context. The islands themselves have nurtured unique local cultures, and the design of the bridges and the traditional townscapes reflect the evolution of regional technology and history.

The greatest charm of Shimanami Kaido lies in its magnificent bridges. The journey begins with the Shin-Onomichi Bridge and leads through the Innoshima, Ikuchijima, Tatara, Omishima, Hakata-Oshima, and finally the grand Kurushima Kaikyo Bridge, which is renowned for its immense scale and beauty. The route also offers a journey through time, with various spots showcasing the transition of engineering, including retro-style bridges and covered paths. Visitors can also explore the cultural depth of the islands, including sites related to the Besshi Copper Mine and beautiful local architecture.
While Shimanami Kaido offers different charms throughout the year, the best time for cycling is during spring (March–May) and autumn (September–November) when the weather is mild and the winds are gentle. Riding through the refreshing spring breeze is a particularly wonderful experience. The scenery also changes beautifully depending on the time of day; an early morning ride offers tranquility and a stunning sunrise, while an evening ride allows you to witness the sunset over the Seto Inland Sea. Some bridges may also be illuminated at night, adding a magical touch to the seascape.

The primary activity is cycling. Using a rental bicycle, you can leisurely explore the scenic paths of the various islands. The sensation of riding across the sea is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Beyond cycling, the route offers a 'cultural journey' where you can encounter the architecture of Kenzo Tange and observe the evolution of Japanese civil engineering. Exploring the small islands on foot and enjoying the local food culture will further enrich your travel experience.
The route begins in Onomichi (Hiroshima) and ends in Imabari (Ehichi). Onomichi is famous for its charming old streets and temple tours, while the Imabari area is well-known for its high-quality towels and citrus fruits. The surrounding islands, part of the Setonaikai Sanjima route, also offer many attractive spots for nature lovers and history enthusiasts.
When cycling, please wear comfortable clothing and bring a hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen to protect yourself from the sun. Staying hydrated with plenty of water is essential. Regarding payments, while major facilities and shops accept credit cards, many small shops and local facilities on the islands are cash-only. It is highly recommended to carry Japanese Yen. While some English signage is available at major points, using a map or translation app is recommended. If you plan to use rental bicycles or stay at accommodations, making a reservation in advance is advised. Please follow all traffic rules and be mindful of pedestrians and vehicles for a safe and enjoyable ride.
