Shimada Bara no Oka Park is a specialized botanical garden dedicated to roses, located in Shimada City, Shizuoka Prefecture. Spanning approximately 1.9 hectares, the park is home to about 500 varieties of roses gathered from all over the world. The facility is well-equipped with a large greenhouse, a rose tunnel greenhouse, and even a dedicated dog run. The rose is the official flower of Shimada City, and you can find special varieties such as 'Miss Shimada' and 'Memory of Shimida' that are deeply connected to the local heritage.
Opened in 1992, this park serves as a center for cultivating and promoting the beauty of roses, which are a symbol of Shimada. The park has long been dedicated to the preservation and display of diverse rose species. Through seasonal festivals and community-led initiatives, the park shares the culture of roses with the public. The grounds are carefully maintained by the 'Shimada Bara no Kai' (Shimada Rose Society), ensuring a high standard of care rooted in the local community.

The park features beautifully designed rose gardens that offer a variety of visual experiences. The large greenhouse and the tunnel greenhouse are particularly noteworthy, as they allow visitors to appreciate the beauty of roses regardless of the outside weather. With a vast collection of global varieties, you can observe a wide range of shapes, colors, and scents. During the peak blooming seasons in spring and autumn, the entire park is transformed into a breathtaking landscape of roses during special festivals.
The best time to visit depends on the blooming season. The primary highlights are in spring and autumn, when the different varieties of roses are in full bloom. The park is open daily from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM, making it ideal for daytime photography and sightseeing. We recommend checking the official schedule beforehand to ensure you catch the peak flowering periods for specific varieties.
Beyond admiring the flowers, the park offers unique facilities such as a dog run, allowing visitors to enjoy the scenic environment alongside their pets. Please note that for commercial photography (such as professional wedding shoots or any photography for profit), prior application and a fee are required. This also applies to visitors bringing in large-scale professional equipment, as these are treated as commercial use and must be reported in advance.
The area around Shimada City is dotted with various spots where you can experience the natural beauty and culture unique to Shizuoka Prefecture. After your visit to the rose garden, you can easily travel to other nearby tourist attractions or explore the lush natural landscapes throughout the prefecture.
As the park covers a large area, we highly recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes. For those planning commercial photography, you must contact the park by phone at least one week in advance and pay a usage fee of 2,200 JPY (in addition to the standard admission fee). To protect the plants, please follow all posted rules and maintain proper etiquette, especially when using the dog run. Please be aware that English-speaking support from staff and signage is limited, so using a translation app is recommended for smoother communication.
