The Shiko Memorial Cultural Exchange Center is a cultural landmark located in Kanazawa, Ishikawa Prefecture. The main building, completed in 1891 (Meiji 24), originally served as the main hall of the Fourth Higher School and is now designated as a National Important Cultural Property. This two-story red-brick structure perfectly preserves the atmosphere of the Meiji and Taisho eras. The facility consists of two primary areas: the 'Shiko Memorial Hall,' which showcases the history of the school, and the 'Ishikawa Modern Literature Museum,' which preserves the works of significant writers.
Originally completed in 1891, this building served as the main hall of the Fourth Higher School. From its opening in 1892 until its closure in 1950, it functioned as a prestigious higher school. Over the decades, the building has been utilized by the Kanazawa University Faculty of Science, the Kanazawa District Court, and the Ishikawa Prefectural Museum. In 1969, its architectural significance was officially recognized when it was designated as a National Important Cultural Property. Today, it serves as a vital hub for preserving local history and fostering cultural activities.
The facility features two distinct exhibition areas. The first is the 'Shiko Memorial Hall,' dedicated to the history and traditions of the former Fourth Higher School. The second is the 'Ishikawa Modern Literature Museum,' which displays the original manuscripts and personal effects of famous writers associated with Ishikawa, such as Kyoka Izumi, Seisei Tokuda, and Saisei Murō. Additionally, the building hosts a charming retro shop and experience facilities that offer a unique way to engage with the past.
Please note that visitors must enter the exhibition rooms by 16:30, one hour before the official closing time. The multipurpose rooms and retro experience areas remain available until 21:00. Regardless of the season, the historic atmosphere provides a serene space to immerse yourself in literature and history. IMPORTANT: Due to the impact of the Noto Peninsula Earthquake, the facility is currently closed for safety inspections. Visitors can enjoy unique cultural experiences in a nostalgic setting. For instance, at the 'Retrism' room, you can experience the charm of the Meiji and Taisho eras by trying on authentic retro clothing, such as traditional kimonos or hakama styles. Near the main entrance, the 'GATE4' retro museum shop offers a variety of original goods and items featuring classic retro designs related to the Shiko school history.
The center is located in a historic district of Kanazawa, situated between Korinbo and the famous Kenrokuen Garden. The surrounding 'Ishikawa Shiko Memorial Park' offers lush greenery, making it a wonderful place for a peaceful stroll. It is a popular stop on a sightseeing route that includes Kenrokuen and other historic landmarks in Kanazawa.
As this building is a National Important Cultural Property, visitors are asked to treat the site with the utmost respect. Please be mindful of your surroundings while in the exhibition rooms.
