Sugaru-ga-taki Falls is a magnificent waterfall with a vertical drop of 60 meters, located in Minamiaso Village, Kumamoto Prefecture. It is honored as one of the "Top 100 Waterfalls in Japan," celebrated for its powerful water flow and dramatic surrounding topography. The name of the falls is rooted in a local legend: it is said that during the "Shimotsuke no Makigari"—one of Japan's oldest traditional hunting rituals—several deer were chased and fell over this very cliff.
The area is steeped in legends involving deer, reflecting the deep connection between the local history and the natural world. Historically, this site tells a story of traditional Japanese hunting culture and the coexistence of humans and nature. While the area was affected by the 2016 Kumamoto earthquakes, the view from the observation point has been fully accessible since October 2021, serving as a symbol of the region's resilience and the enduring beauty of its natural wonders.
The primary highlight is the sight of the 60-meter waterfall plunging down the sheer cliffs. From the observation deck, visitors can witness the white spray of the water clashing against the dark, rugged rock faces and lush greenery. On clear days, the contrast between the brilliant blue sky, white clouds, and the cascading white water makes it an exceptional spot for landscape photography.
The appearance of the falls changes beautifully depending on the season and weather. A sunny day offers the most vibrant colors, making it ideal for photography. Sugaru-ga-taki Falls is nestled within the vast, grand landscape of the Aso region. Along National Route 57, there are designated spaces for viewing and parking, making it an easy addition to any scenic driving itinerary. The surrounding Minamiaso area is dotted with various spots where you can experience the rich, untouched nature of Kumamoto.
Access to the viewpoint is via designated paths. To preserve the natural environment, please ensure you take all trash back with you and respect the local environment. While the observation area is open to the public, it is a natural setting, so we recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes and being mindful of your footing.
