Shidako Lake (Shidako-ko) is a breathtaking highland lake situated at an altitude of approximately 600 meters on the slopes southeast of Mt. Tumi in Beppu, Oita Prefecture. Located within the scenic Aso-Kuju National Park, the lake covers an area of about 90,000m² with a circumference of roughly 2km, offering a vast and rich natural environment. Historically, it was celebrated as one of the "Three Great Scenic Views of Beppu," and it remains a beloved destination for its tranquil beauty. Visitors can enjoy the sight of white swans drifting on the water and colorful koi fish swimming gracefully, creating a deeply peaceful atmosphere.
The lake's formation is tied to the geological history of the region, shaped by the volcanic activity of Mt. Tsurumi. In the pre-war era, it was highly regarded as one of the top scenic spots in Beppu. There was once a period of great vitality when the area hosted the "Shidako Utopia" amusement park and various national lodging facilities. Today, the area has evolved into a refined destination that focuses on natural preservation and outdoor recreation, serving as a premier site for camping and enjoying the pristine mountain scenery.

The greatest appeal of Shidako Lake lies in its silent, mirror-like surface and the lush greenery that surrounds it. The landscape transforms beautifully with the seasons, offering vibrant colors throughout the year. Watching the swans and koi provides a sense of healing and relaxation for many visitors. Additionally, the lake is connected to Kagurame Lake—a famous spot for iris flowers—via a scenic walking trail, allowing travelers to explore the interconnected natural beauty of the highlands.
Shidako Lake reveals a different face in every season. In spring, the landscape is brightened by cherry blossoms, while autumn brings a stunning palette of fall foliage to the surrounding mountains. The most comfortable times to visit are spring and autumn. While daytime exploration is pleasant, please be aware that because it is a high-altitude plateau, temperatures can drop significantly in the mornings and evenings. We highly recommend bringing warm clothing if you plan to camp or stay late.

The area features the "RECAMP Beppu Shidako Lake" campsite, where you can enjoy BBQ and overnight stays in a truly immersive natural setting. This experience offers a perfect escape from the hustle and bustle of urban life. For those seeking more active adventures, "Forest Adventure Beppu" is also located nearby, providing an excellent environment for tree-climbing and outdoor challenges. Whether you seek quiet contemplation or active adventure, Shidako Lake caters to both.
The area around the lake is dotted with various natural landmarks. To the southeast lies Kagurame Lake, renowned for its beautiful iris displays. You can easily access this area via the walking paths from Shidako Lake. Exploring these interconnected lakes and trails allows you to experience the full depth of the natural wonders found in the Beppu highland region.

Due to its high altitude, the temperature here is often lower than in the city. Even during summer, please prepare layers or a light jacket to handle temperature fluctuations. If you plan to use the campsite or enjoy a BBQ, we recommend checking reservation requirements and equipment needs in advance. To preserve this beautiful environment, please strictly follow all rules regarding trash disposal and fire usage.
