The Shiga Kusatsu Road (Nagano side) is a premier scenic route passing through the high-altitude areas near Yanakita Town, Shimotakai District, Nagano Prefecture. The greatest draw of this route is the awe-inspiring natural scenery viewed from high elevations. It includes the Shugoryo Pass, which marks the highest point of any national highway in Japan at 2,172m. From this vantage point, you can witness a dynamic panorama of 2,000-meter-class mountains. Beyond driving, the area offers a variety of seasonal activities such as hiking, cycling, and skiing.
As part of National Route 292, this road plays a vital role in connecting Nagano and Gunma Prefectures. Once a rugged path through the wilderness, it has been developed into a highly popular tourist route. A notable cultural landmark is the Shugoryo Pass; many local hotels and facilities offer "Certificates of Reaching the Highest Point of Japan's National Highways" to commemorate the journey, making it a significant destination for both motorists and mountaineers.
The highlight of this route is the area around Shugoryo Pass at 2,172m. Here, you can enjoy a panoramic view of the surrounding 2,000-meter peaks, including Mt. Manza, Mt. Yokote, and Mt. Shiga. In the early spring after the roads open, visitors may witness the spectacular "Snow Walls" (Snow Corridor), where snow banks can reach heights of 7 to 8 meters along the roadside. The landscape transforms beautifully depending on the season you visit.
The Shiga Kusatsu Road is characterized by its distinct seasonal beauty. In late spring, you can enjoy the fresh greenery emerging from the melting snow. Summer brings a vibrant landscape filled with blooming alpine wildflowers. Autumn is the ideal season for driving, as the mountainsides turn brilliant shades of red and yellow. In winter, the area becomes a hub for snow sports like skiing and snowboarding. Please note that from late November to late April, the section between Tenguyama Gate and Yosaka Gate is closed for the winter season.
This route offers much more than just a drive. From summer to autumn, the high-altitude terrain is perfect for hiking and cycling among the clouds. In winter, the surrounding ski resorts provide world-class skiing and snowboarding-friendly environments. Various rest areas and roadside stations (Michi-no-Eki) are available along the route. On the Nagano side, "Michi-no-Eki Hokushin Nagano Yamanouchi" is a convenient stop. The area is also close to the Shiga Kogen resort area, making it ideal for travelers planning an overnight stay. If you continue through to the Gunma side, you will find easy access to famous hot spring destinations like Kusatsu Onsen and Manza Onsen.
Because you are traveling at high altitudes, weather conditions can change rapidly. Please prepare clothing appropriate for the season; even in summer, a light jacket is recommended, and heavy winter gear is essential for the colder months.
