The Shiga Kusatsu Road (Gunma side) is a scenic route connecting Naganohara Town and Nakanojo Town to Kusatsu Town in Gunma Prefecture. This route climbs through deep forest zones toward high-altitude plateaus, offering a dramatic change in scenery depending on the season. A particularly striking sight occurs during the early spring opening, when massive, towering snow walls line both sides of the road, showcasing the incredible scale of nature.

Changes in volcanic alert levels or eruption warnings can lead to sudden traffic restrictions. Starting from the lush forests of Nakanojo, the landscape transitions into high-altitude wetlands and treeless ridges as you reach higher elevations. The scenery changes most drastically by season. In late April, right after the road opens, you can witness the famous 'Snow Corridor' with its high walls of snow. By May, the landscape is filled with fresh greenery and high-altitude flora. Please note that during the winter season (late November to late April), certain sections are closed due to heavy snow. It is highly recommended to plan your trip around the opening dates and check for any seasonal closures.
The primary way to enjoy this area is through a scenic drive. As you climb toward the high altitudes, the view from your car window shifts from dense forests to vast, open highland plateaus.
