Shikajuku Dam is a rock-fill dam located on the Shiroishi River within the Abuma River system in Shikajuku Town, Katata District, Miyagi Prefecture. Boasting a height of 90 meters, it is renowned as the largest dam in the prefecture. The reservoir created by the dam is known as "Lake Shikajuku," and its breathtaking beauty has earned it a place on the "100 Selected Dam Lakes" list curated by the Dam Source Area Environment Improvement Center. As a vital water source for central Miyagi, including Sendai City, the area offers a harmonious blend of natural beauty and essential infrastructure.
The region holds significant historical value, once serving as a vital transport route known as the "Yamanaka Shikajuku Kaido" during the Edo period, which connected Oshu and Bushu. The area was historically prone to severe flooding from typhoons, leading to the construction of the dam to manage water resources and ensure a stable supply of agricultural and industrial water for the Sendai Plain. At the on-site "Museum of Water and History," visitors can learn about the history of the villages that were submerged during the dam's construction and the evolution of the local community.

The landscape around the dam changes beautifully with the seasons. In summer (especially around August), the surrounding greenery is at its most lush and vibrant, making it an excellent time for photography. In winter, the nearby area becomes a destination for skiing and snowboarding. Please note the seasonal operating hours for the Museum of Water and History: from April to November, it is open until 16:30; from December to March, it closes at 16:00.
Visitors can enjoy leisurely walks around the dam and capture the scenic views of the reservoir. In late August, the area hosts the "Walk Shikajuku in Waraji" event, where participants walk the historic Shikajuku Kaido wearing traditional straw sandals (waraji), providing a unique way to connect with local culture. The dramatic backdrop of the dam and lake makes it a favorite spot for photographers.
There are many other attractions within Shikajuku Town. In winter, you can enjoy winter sports at the Miyagi Zao Shikajuku Ski Resort.
