Shibukawa Zoo is a unique zoo nestled within the breathtaking scenery of Setonaikai National Park in Tamano City, Okayama Prefecture. Spanning a vast area of approximately 30,000 tsubo (roughly 100,000 square meters), the zoo is home to about 600 animals across 80 different species. A core concept of the park is "not covering the Earth with a lid," meaning instead of paved asphalt, many paths are made of natural earth. This allows visitors to feel the natural breeze, hear the rustling of trees, and listen to the songs of wild birds up close. It is a deeply peaceful facility where you can spend time as part of nature rather than just a spectator.
The zoo is situated in the wonderful natural environment of Setonaikai National Park. Having celebrated its 90th anniversary in 2024 and its 35th anniversary of a specific milestone in 2023, the zoo has long been beloved as a place to experience the vitality of life and coexistence with nature. The grounds also feature a memorial stone dedicated to the animals that have lived alongside humans, serving as a place to reflect on the preciousness of life.
The zoo features a diverse range of animals, including the famous Aldabra giant tortoises. Interaction with rabbits and the changing seasonal landscapes are major attractions. For instance, in the summer, you might spot various insects like rhinoceros beetles, offering a different side of nature each season. Additionally, the Kachi-Kachi Yama Observatory offers a stunning panoramic view of the Seto Inland Sea, providing a perfect spot to relax and enjoy the scenery.
Different seasons offer different experiences. Summer is ideal for observing insects and strolling through lush greenery. In autumn, the surrounding trees turn beautiful colors, and you can enjoy walks through paths covered in fallen leaves. The zoo is open from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM (last entry at 4:30 PM), allowing you to see the animals most active during the bright daylight hours.

Scenic spots like the Kachi-Kachi Yama Observatory and Yushun-no-oka are scattered throughout the park, making them perfect for relaxing or enjoying a picnic. The zoo is also conveniently located near other attractions like Omocha Kingdom, making it easy to include in your travel itinerary.
Because the zoo is set in a natural environment, many paths are unpaved earth. We strongly recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes. While strollers are allowed, please be aware that they may be difficult to push on certain unpaved sections.
